The New York Mets have been linked to almost every top free agent on the market. It’s the same story every year, where the Mets show their interest thanks to billionaire owner Steve Cohen. The free-agent market isn’t the only place the Mets are searching; they’ve also been linked to several of the top names on the trade block.

For starters, the Mets have shown interest in adding pitching, primarily a front-line starter who can take pressure off their younger arms. Díaz, the Mets’ closer for the last several seasons, is seeking a five-year deal in the $100 million range, similar to what the Mets gave him after the 2022 season. New York remains adamant about not going higher than three seasons for a reliever, making Megill a legitimate option.

The brother of current Met Tylor Megill, Trevor has two years of team control, giving the Mets a cost-effective late-inning option. In 2025, Megill appeared in 50 games, recording 30 saves with 60 strikeouts and a 2.47 ERA.

Beyond the standard numbers, he boasts strong underlying metrics, including a high strikeout rate (approximately 10.6 K/9 over the last two seasons) and a low opponent batting average, indicating his performance is supported by legitimate swing-and-miss stuff.

The Mets would be parting with two of their top-five prospects, but they hang onto Jonah Tong, which seems to be a priority, while clearing infield space by moving Ronny Mauricio.

Why It Works for the Brewers

The Brewers have been down this road before: moving players right before they’re due for major contract decisions. Peralta was a top-10 pitcher in baseball last season, going 17–6 with a 2.70 ERA and 204 strikeouts. With numbers like those, Peralta will be competing in the same market tier as Tarik Skubal, likely commanding slightly less money, but still more than the Brewers are comfortable investing long-term.

When trading Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles, the Brewers landed DL Hall and Joey Ortiz, both of whom remain key contributors. When trading Josh Hader, however, the return was minimal, with Taylor Rogers and Dinelson Lamet headlining the package.

Jett Williams is expected to be MLB-ready this season, offering an all-around skill set as a potential leadoff hitter and everyday player who can handle a premium defensive position. Along with him, Milwaukee would gain Brandon Sproat, an MLB-ready arm who made four starts for the Mets last season, posting a 4.79 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 20 innings.

With Milwaukee’s history of a “sell-high” strategy, this package would boost their farm system and provide young talent that’s on the brink of contributing at the MLB level.

Main Photo Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

The MLB Winter Meetings have kicked off in Orlando, and like snowflakes, rumors are swirling through the air.
