Appearing in &#8220;Good Sports&#8221; on Amazon Prime the future Hall of Fame manager said that he would be in favor of a salary cap for baseball with one major provision. Roberts elaborated further. &#8220;I think the NBA has done a nice job of revenue sharing with the players and the owners. Then he lowered the boom. &#8220;But if you are going to suppress spending at the top, I think you need to raise the floor and make those bottom feeders spend money too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Roberts echo&#8217;s the concerns of the Players Association. Not surprisingly, they are adamantly opposed to a limit without making the owners spend a percentage of the<\/p>\n<h3>The Lay of the Land<\/h3>\n<p>Ironically, this sentiment comes from the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/03\/10\/dodgers-dave-roberts-manager-extension\/\" target=\"_self\"> highest-paid manager<\/a> in baseball and public face of the team with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/11\/06\/dodgers-spending-frenzy-season\/\" target=\"_self\">largest payroll<\/a> in baseball who won back-to-back World Series. Roberts even joked in a post-game interview on the verge of the Fall Classic about the Dodgers &#8220;ruining baseball.&#8221; Most of the small market have come out in favor of a mechanism to control spending. However, Hal Steinbrenner of the Yankees is also in favor of a cap, alluding to the fact that that it&#8217;s hard &#8220;to compete&#8221; with the Dodgers when referring to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/scottta01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanner Scott<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/02\/10\/tanner-scott-dodgers-closer-outlook\/\" target=\"_self\">free agency<\/a> last off season.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there are ownerships like the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals who refuse to invest back into the players to make their teams competitive.<\/p>\n<h3>The Clock is Ticking<\/h3>\n<p>The discussion comes ahead of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement which is set to expire at season&#8217;s end.
