Their newly prominent division rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays, have done that recently. The Yankees may have dodged that bullet when Toronto signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/ceasedy01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan Cease<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yankees need a super-star signing this offseason to bring momentum and excitement back to the Bronx. The team is expected to keep an eye out for a top-tier starting pitcher. This may be questionable due to the options they currently have on staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colege01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerrit Cole<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodonca01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carlos Rod\u00f3n<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schlica01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Schlittler<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=gillu01,gil---004lui&amp;search=Luis+Gil&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Gil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/friedma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Fried<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schmicl01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clarke Schmidt<\/a> are all options on the rotational end. Some of these guys already have a spot in next year&#8217;s rotation, while others could be trade pieces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, the free agent market is not the hottest for starting pitching. Cease was one of, if not the <a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/dylan-cease-656302?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top pitching option<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/11\/30\/free-agent-reliever-seranthony-dominguez-could-fit-yankees-set-up-role\/\" target=\"_self\">market<\/a>. The Blue Jays took any hope away from the Yankees, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/11\/26\/dylan-cease-signs-seven-year-deal-blue-jays\/\" target=\"_self\">locking up Cease<\/a> long-term. Toronto <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed Cease for a booming seven-year, $210 million contract. This adds to their already stacked pitching rotation. However, the Cease signing should not bother the Yankees one bit. The Blue Jays signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=greench03,green-013cha&amp;search=Chad+Green&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chad Green<\/a> when he completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnto01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-12-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tommy John<\/a> surgery, and took a chance on his return being up to par.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green did eventually work out for them. Last summer, the Blue Jays traded for Shane\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Bieber after<\/span>\u00a0he hadn&#8217;t pitched all year. This also worked out for them. The difference between those options as opposed to Cease is the proven numbers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bieber and Green were a roll of the dice since they didn&#8217;t have a recent sample size for Toronto to predict their performance. But Cease\u2019s recent numbers are enough to argue that the Yankees&#8217; signing him is not justified. The pitcher\u2019s inconsistencies are quite concerning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His command and ability to throw strikes are questionable, Cease has put up 200-plus strikeouts each year for the past five seasons. While impressive, there&#8217;s also his high walk rate to take into consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His walk rate increased 1.3% from 2024 to 2025. In 2022, he led the league in walks with 78. Cease has improved that number a bit, but his overall command is still concerning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, he led the league in wild pitches, at 14, while recording the same numbers in 2021. This is an interesting statistic to have; very unorthodox. His ERA increased from 3.47 in 2024 to 4.55 in 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cease finished 2025 with an 8-12 record for the San Diego Padres, which may have been affected by the actual team performance. Overall, Cease may not have offered anything out of the ordinary to the Yankees.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Current Options are Better<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To add an arm with the caliber of Cease, the Yankees may need to consider putting other options on the back burner. Fried,\u00a0Cole, Gil, and Rod\u00f3n are absolutes in the rotation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cam Schlittler may be the most viable option for the sixth man spot. He would definitely not be a piece to trade. Clarke Schmidt, on the other hand, may be a movable piece.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schmidt does not fit into the rotation, and if he did, his ERA of 3.32 would justify him keeping that spot.
