{"id":10934,"date":"2018-01-24T19:19:54","date_gmt":"2018-01-25T00:19:54","guid":{"rendered":"lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/\/?p=10934"},"modified":"2018-01-24T19:19:54","modified_gmt":"2018-01-25T00:19:54","slug":"2018-baseball-hall-fame-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2018\/01\/24\/2018-baseball-hall-fame-class\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 Baseball Hall of Fame Class: Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome, and Trevor Hoffman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Baseball Writers of America Association has announced tha the 2018 Baseball Hall of Fame class will be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesch06.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chipper Jones<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=guerrvl01,guerre002vla&amp;search=Vladimir+Guerrero&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vladimir Guerrero<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomeji01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Thome<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hoffmtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Hoffman<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Jones got in with 92.2% of the vote, Guerrero wound up with 92.9%, Thome with 89.8, and Hoffman with 79.9%<\/p>\n<p>Jones and Thome were elected in their first years of eligibility; Hoffman was on his third ballot, and Guerrero got in on his second try.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Chipper Jones appeared on 97.2% of ballots, followed by Vladimir Guerrero (92.9%), Jim Thome (89.8%) and Trevor Hoffman (79.9%).<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jared Diamond (@jareddiamond) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jareddiamond\/status\/956306234877063168?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 24, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>2018 Baseball Hall of Fame Class: Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Jim Thome, and Trevor Hoffman<\/h2>\n<p>Jones, the 1999 NL MVP, played 19 seasons, all of them with the <a href=\"lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/\/mlb-teams\/atlanta-braves\/\" target=\"_self\">Atlanta Braves<\/a>.\u00a0 Acknowledged as one of the top third-basemen and switch-hitters of all-time, Jones was an eight-time All-Star and constant postseason performer, playing games in 12 postseasons.\u00a0 Jones will be the 16th primary third-baseman in the Hall, and sixth to enter on his first ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Guerrero came up fifth on the writers ballot, with a 71.7 percentage.\u00a0 The 2004 AL MVP was a nine-time All-Star and an eight-time winner of an outfield Silver Slugger Award. He finished his career with over 2,500 hits and 449 career home runs.<\/p>\n<p>Thome, who&#8217;s 612 lifetime home runs has him currently eighth all-time, slugged his way through 22 seasons, 13 as a member of the <a href=\"lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/\/mlb-teams\/cleveland-indians\/\" target=\"_self\">Cleveland Indians<\/a>.\u00a0 Thome was a five-time All-Star, as well as the 1996 AL Silver Slugger Award winner at third-base.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman, who&#8217;s 601 saves ranks second all-time behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=riverma01,rivera004mar&amp;search=Mariano+Rivera&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mariano Rivera<\/a>, had nine seasons of 40 or more saves, including 53 in 1998. He was a seven time All-Star, and had the NL Reliever of the Year Award named in his honor.\u00a0 Last year, he came up fourth, just below the 75% cutoff, with 74%.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=martied01,martin006edg,martin005edg&amp;search=Edgar+Martinez&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edgar Martinez<\/a><\/strong>, on his ninth and second-to-last shot at the writer&#8217;s ballot, wound up the closest without getting in, at 70.4%.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mussimi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Mussina<\/a><\/strong> inched closer to a potential call, with 63.5% on his sixth try on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>The controversial PED duo of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clemero02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roger Clemens<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bondsba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barry Bonds<\/a><\/strong> still linger on the ballot, with 57.3% and 56.4%, respectively, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schilcu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Curt Schilling<\/a><\/strong> rounded out those getting 50% or more with 51.2%.
