That doesn\u2019t imply cooperation. An NLDS series win is expected. (Any series loss outside of LA is forbidden)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Bullpen Roles &amp; Leverage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Must define when and who pitches. Create consistent leverage roles and avoid the plug-and-play tactics. This has been a major issue in the past. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranjh01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jhoan Duran<\/a> will close, but who enters before him? Thomson has to find his guy to set up and relieve the starter, then stick to it. This will take decisions off the manager&#8217;s lap, which can help.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Hitting &amp; Accountability: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not hitting is not tolerated. Kevin Long <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/10\/16\/phillies-refusing-make-necessary-changes\/\" target=\"_self\">will return<\/a>, but a philosophy change is needed. STOP the chasing. Adapt a playoff plate approach. If you aren&#8217;t putting together good at-bats, you are not getting any\/or getting less.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Unhappy Stars\/Maximize Roster:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Balancing workload while staying competitive and keeping momentum. Mitigating stars&#8217; decline by finding suitable backup options with power. Integrating younger contributors. Installing energy + an unseen, new look for opponents. Are the stars happy? Make sure they are\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Elevating the Urgency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 2025 was \u201cThe Year\u201d because of the core&#8217;s contractual situation. With the expectation to re-sign Schwarber, Realmuto, etc., the window stays open but with 10x the pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Consistently Inconsistent &#8211; But Winning<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are questions about whether the current core has already hit its peak in 2022-2023. Bryce Harper was new and shiny; now he wants an extension plus due respect from Dave Dombrowski. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/realmjt01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.T. Realmuto<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schwaky01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Schwarber<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suarera01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ranger Su\u00e1rez<\/a> were major components in the playoff window of late. All three are currently free agents. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/casteni01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Castellanos<\/a> fizzled out in 2025 and likely played his last game in Philadelphia. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bohmal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alec Bohm<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stottbr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryson Stott<\/a> were budding stars. Neither has progressed much at the plate, and a change could be made at third base. The team does have valuable prospects coming to help, such as Justin Crawford, Andrew Painter &amp; Aidan Miller. They\u2019ll fight to bring the NL home run king back in\u00a0Schwarber. As for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/10\/17\/catcher-jt-realmuto-future-with-phillies\/\" target=\"_self\">Realmuto<\/a>, it\u2019ll get shaky, but it could be done. Su\u00e1rez will likely cost too much to retain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Proven<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The skipper is 346-251 in 597 career games managed. That\u2019s a .580 winning percentage. The truth is that good regular seasons and accomplishments only go so far in Philadelphia. Following a World Series appearance in 2022, Philadelphia was eliminated in the NLDS in two straight seasons. Since the NLCS loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2023, Thomson&#8217;s Phillies have had two bright red flashing lights on their dashboard, with inconsistent to no success at the plate, with questionable decisions in the biggest moments. In one notable instance, Thomson\u2019s decision to call for a sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the 2025 NLDS was heavily criticized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As for the bats, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turnetr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trea Turner<\/a> went a combined 10-for-48 in the NLDS and weren&#8217;t much better in 2024. That&#8217;s not on Thomson, but it&#8217;s a recurring problem that hasn\u2019t been taken seriously. He seemed to be more active in 2025, but the road leads back to confusion and impatience. Somewhat of the same group, perhaps a similar style, but a different result is demanded. The pressure is intense, yet the payoff in a city like Philadelphia would feel as good as gold, likely better. Thomson\u2019s management style is based on maintaining clubhouse unity, loyalty to his players, and heavy analytics. It\u2019s not inaccurate to say Harper and Co. would go to war for him no matter the circumstances. Installing culture is immeasurable in a locker room and has been hard to establish for many clubs, but not for Philly. Unfortunately, when you have top-tier talent and a stable locker room, anything less than a deep October run becomes disappointing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Rob Thomson, 2026 is less about a rebuild and more about executing or extending a peak window of opportunity for the Phillies. They have the tools. Star players, the payroll, the division titles. What remains is the deliverance of that promise: a World Series title. The question hanging over Thomson is whether he can adapt tactics and manage under pressure fast enough to deliver what the front office, fan base, and media expect.
