The former Dodger and Chicago Cub also showcased his outstanding skills and versatility in the outfield this past season, tying for 18th place amongst MLB outfielders in outs above average (OAA) with 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Cody Bellinger plans to opt out of his contract and become a free agent this winter, per <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jorgecastillo?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@jorgecastillo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Following the Yankees&#8217; ALDS loss, Bellinger said he&#8217;d &#8220;absolutely&#8221; welcome the opportunity to return to the Bronx <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/95KpM3e1sR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/95KpM3e1sR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Yankees Videos (@snyyankees) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/snyyankees\/status\/1976672192751341826?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 10, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Desire to Stay<\/h3>\n<p>Now, he&#8217;ll likely test <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/10\/09\/yankees-free-agent-questions\/\" target=\"_self\">the waters of free agency<\/a> after proving his worth with the Yankees. However, he did state his desire to return to the Bronx following the Yankees\u2019 season-ending 5-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. &#8220;I had an unbelievable time putting on this uniform,&#8221; Bellinger said. &#8220;Yankee Stadium, the fans, the organization, the culture that these guys have created in this locker room. It&#8217;s special.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for whether or not the Yankees are on the same page, the answer is less certain. Though Bellinger was a great fit in pinstripes and would be well worth a long-term deal, the Yankees&#8217; front office may have another vision in mind for the outfield next season. Bellinger\u2019s teammate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grishtr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-10-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trent Grisham<\/a>, is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/09\/03\/trent-grishams-breakout-warrants-payday\/\" target=\"_self\">also hitting free agency this winter<\/a>, and the Yankees also have two young outfielders who could be ready for starting roles very soon in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dominja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-10-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jasson Dom\u00ednguez<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=jones-003spe,jones-001spe&amp;search=Spencer+Jones&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-10-11_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Jones<\/a>. So, they may try to save money by putting their faith in their young guys, but they could also be eyeing an external replacement for Bellinger.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Too Early to Tell<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a bit pointless at this stage to assert whether or not the Yankees will want to bring Bellinger back after his opt out, because they will make their stance well-known once the bidding game begins.
