James McCann<\/a> has been a vital addition since joining the Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a>. The veteran catcher was brought in to provide experience and depth when Gabriel Moreno<\/a> went on the injured list with a fractured finger.<\/p>\n

James McCann Has Been a Vital Addition for Diamondbacks<\/h2>\n

Lack of Catching Depth<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When Moreno went down with an injury, only defensive catcher Jose Herrera<\/a> was left as the primary catcher on the 40-man roster. With a lack of catching depth, the Diamondbacks had an issue. At Triple-A Reno, Aramis Garcia<\/a> and Ren\u00e9 Pinto<\/a> were journeymen catchers, but not seen as everyday catchers in the big leagues.<\/p>\n

Signed in June<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On March 17, 2025, McCann signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves<\/a> hoping for a chance to get back to the big leagues. He played in 42 games in the minors but was granted his release on June 22. The Diamondbacks immediately signed<\/a> him. He made his debut for them on June 25.<\/p>\n

Made an Impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Since his arrival, he has made an impact with his defense, even throwing out a runner in his first game. His offense has been a bonus. Although he has a career batting average of .240, McCann has come in and provided a spark. He hit his first home run<\/a> as a Diamondbacks player on July 1. After this past Sunday\u2019s game, he was hitting .310.<\/p>\n

Veteran Presence<\/strong><\/h3>\n

McCann has shown his veteran presence both on the field and in the clubhouse. The 12-year veteran went to work immediately once he joined the Diamondbacks. He started conversations with the pitching staff and offered his expertise on pitch selection.<\/p>\n

Brandon Pfaadt<\/strong><\/h3>\n

James McCann has been a vital addition to the Diamondbacks. In a game on June 28, he caught starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt<\/a>, the first time the two had ever worked together in a game. Pfaadt praised McCann for helping him stay calm after a rough first inning. After a mound visit, Pfaadt was able to lock in and get three straight outs. He would go on to pitch five quality innings, striking out seven batters.<\/p>\n

Game Calling<\/strong><\/h3>\n

McCann has been praised for his game-calling and ability to build relationships and understanding with pitchers. He is known for being able to guide both young and seasoned pitchers throughout a game. His overall experience, leadership, and game-calling have already helped guide this team\u2019s pitching staff.<\/p>\n

Value as a Catcher<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Providing value as a catcher isn\u2019t always about offense. McCann has his defense, game calling, and leadership which aren\u2019t often discussed. Pitchers have spoken highly of him, praising him for being behind the plate for them on game days.<\/p>\n

Clubhouse<\/strong><\/h3>\n

McCann\u2019s experience playing for several teams also gives him a valuable viewpoint in the clubhouse. He has mentored younger players and ensures his teammates are comfortable, wanting them to succeed. Former teammates mention his strong work ethic and game preparation. He helps build team chemistry and friendships with the other players. His experience and veteran status brings a calming influence to the clubhouse.<\/p>\n

Moreno Injury<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Expected to only be out a short time with his hand injury. Moreno was moved to the 60-day injured list<\/a>. Look for him to be out until mid-September. That means McCann will continue to provide his leadership at least until Moreno\u2019s return.<\/p>\n

Outlook<\/strong><\/h3>\n

However, while James McCann has been a vital addition and will continue to be part of this team, with the Diamondbacks recent slide, appear to be \u201csellers\u201d instead of \u201cbuyers\u201d this trade season. It is possible they could receive a call regarding a trade for McCann. Teams in contention would likely go for his leadership as well as his abilities. Trading McCann for a prospect could happen at the trade deadline, July 31. Fans\u2014and McCann\u2014are in a wait-and-see position.<\/p>\n
