The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned infielder Jared Triolo<\/a> to Triple-A Indianapolis and selected the contract of pitcher Yohan Ram\u00edrez<\/a>. To make room for Ram\u00edrez on the 40-man roster, outfielder\/first baseman Matt Gorski<\/a> was designated for assignment. The moves were announced on the Pirates Transactions page. Ram\u00edrez will join the team for Friday night\u2019s game in Minnesota against the Twins.<\/p>\n

Pirates Option Jared Triolo to Triple-A<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s not every day that you read that a Gold Glove Award recipient<\/a> is sent down to minors, but you\u2019re reading it now. It was a move that was long overdue. Triolo, a plus defender all over the infield, has struggled with the bat this season. He\u2019s hitting just .158\/.253\/.266, 3 HR, and 10 RBI, \u201cgood\u201d for a weak 46 OPS+. Besides being the Pirates’\u00a0 primary backup on the left side of the infield, Triolo has served as the right-handed-hitting half of a first base platoon with Spencer Horwitz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unless another move is in the works, this means that the Pirates’ brain trust is ready to see what Horwitz can do against left-handed pitching. Horwitz is 3-for-22 against left-handed pitching so far this year. It also means that Jack Suwinski<\/a>\u2019s spot on the active roster is safe for now. Suwinski was recalled<\/a> on Tuesday. He may be getting more than a cursory look this time around.<\/p>\n

We have selected the contract of RHP Yohan Ram\u00edrez from Triple-A Indianapolis, and optioned INF Jared Triolo to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday to make room on the 26-man active roster.<\/p>\n
