What does that mean exactly? Every other league takes a backseat while Major League Baseball drives through the warm months as the only professional sport with competitive games. And with that comes one of the game\u2019s most beloved traditions: the MLB All-Star Game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, fans vote for who they think deserves to start\u2014and often, that includes names from their favorite teams, or simply the biggest stars in the sport. But as we\u2019ve seen in years past, fan voting can be\u2026 complicated. Just ask 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harpebr03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-06-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryce Harper<\/a>, who posted a .282 average with 15 homers and a .899 OPS by midseason and still didn\u2019t make the cut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this series, we\u2019ll go position by position, breaking down the players most deserving of All-Star nods\u2014along with a few dark horse names who might sneak in if the stars align. We&#8217;ll start with the most likely starting catchers in each league for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2025 MLB All-Star Starter Picks: Catcher<\/h2>\n<h3>American League Catcher: Cal Raleigh<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At most positions, there&#8217;s a legitimate debate over who should start. At catcher in the AL? Not so much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/raleica01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-06-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cal Raleigh<\/a>, the Seattle Mariners&#8217; slugging backstop\u2014affectionately known as &#8220;Big Dumper.&#8221; While the nickname might be what fans remember first, it\u2019s his bat that\u2019s making history. Given a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/03\/25\/mariners-ink-cal-raleigh-six-year-extension\/\" target=\"_self\">six-year extension<\/a> before the start of the season, Raleigh is currently on pace for one of the best offensive seasons by a catcher in decades, and it\u2019s only early June. But this is Cal Raleigh\u2019s spot. His raw power brings back memories of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/benchjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-06-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Bench<\/a>, and he\u2019s overtaken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/perezsa02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-06-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salvador Perez<\/a> as the top slugging catcher in the game. He\u2019s not just the best catcher in the AL\u2014he\u2019s one of the most powerful hitters in all of baseball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barring something dramatic, Raleigh will be in Atlanta on July 15, starting behind the plate for the American League.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>National League Catcher: Will Smith<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Same story, different league. The NL catcher race isn\u2019t much of a race at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=smithwi05,smithwi04,smith-094wil,smith-091wil,smith-088wil,smith-090wil&amp;search=Will+Smith&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-06-09_br\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will Smith<\/a> of the Dodgers has dominated the position this year. Through 52 games, he\u2019s batting .322 with a .919 OPS, leading all National League catchers by a wide margin.
