During the 2017 Players Weekend, players wore nicknames on their jerseys and displayed custom equipment that helped fans develop a deeper connection with their favorite athletes. The tradition continued until the shortened 2020 season, and didn’t return until the 2024 season.

Last season, Players Weekend was split into three different days, each day consisting of a different theme. Friday’s theme was “Off-field interests,” where players would get to show off their personalities and off-the-field interests. On Saturday, the theme was “causes,” and players got to represent charities and causes close to them. The weekend concluded with “appreciation” on Sunday, and players were able to honor those who helped them make it to the major leagues.

The return of Players Weekend was a massive success last year, as it garnered 74.5 million impressions and 2.4 million engagements on social media.

This season, the league will continue with the three themes, but won’t assign them to certain days to let players express themselves as they please throughout the weekend. There won’t be nicknames on the jerseys again this year, but players will once again wear their numbers on their hats in a “youthful design.” There will also be in-stadium and broadcast changes to fit the theme of expression. Once the weekend is over, players will be able to auction off the equipment they used to benefit charities of their choice.

Main Photo Credits: Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images

Major League Baseball has announced that Players Weekend will return from August 15-17 this season.
