In 2003, Liriano was traded, along with pitchers Joe Nathan and Boof Bonser, to the Minnnesota Twins in exchange for A.J. Pierzynski. Liriano would play with the Twins for seven years, pitching a 4.33 ERA with 788 strikeouts in 783.1 innings pitched. In the middle of the 2012 season, Liriano was traded to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for third baseman Eduardo Escobar and pitcher Pedro Hernandez. At the end of that year, Liriano signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He would play four years in Pittsburgh, pitching a 3.67 ERA with 659 strikeouts.

In the 2016 off-season, Liriano was traded by the Pirates to the Toronto Blue Jays, along with catcher Reese McGuire and right fielder Harold Ramirez. In exchange, the Pirates received pitcher Drew Hutchinson. Liriano would play two years in Toronto. During those two years, Liriano would pitch a skeptical 4.77 ERA, with 126 strikeouts. After those two years, Liriano would be traded again, this time to Houston. In exchange, the Blue Jays acquired outfielder Norichika Aoki and right fielder Teoscar Hernandez. During his career, Liriano has pitched a 4.15 ERA with 1642 strikeouts. He was also named an All-Star in 2006.

Impact of the Signing

For the Astros, this means losing a very good pitcher that could be used in the rotation or bullpen. He may have a rocky ERA, but Liriano is still reliable. And for the Tigers, they gain a pitcher they can use anywhere they need him to be. Liriano will look to once again get his career on track, and Detroit is the perfect place to start.

Main Photo
Embed from Getty Images

Francisco Liriano, the reliable starter, has moved to help another bullpen as it was announced that he signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers worth.
