One of the most polished hitters that could be off the boards within the first ten picks of this year’s MLB draft will be Jonathan India. The third baseman is having a breakout year for the Gators in the SEC, hitting .382 with a career-high 15 homers. The Gators currently sit in first place in the SEC and a huge reason for that is the production from India in the heart of the Gators lineup.

Jonathan India 2018 MLB Draft Profile

India was a highly touted prospect out of high school. He participated in the Perfect Game All-American game in San Diego in his senior year, a game for the best high school prospects in the country. India was selected by the Brewers in the 26th round of the ’15 draft out of American Heritage HS in Coral Springs, Florida. He decided to not sign and begin his collegiate career at the University of Florida instead.

That decision has paid off for the 21-year old as he’s one of the best all-around players in the 2018 draft class. His standout tool is the bat. India has lightning quick hands at the dish and makes hard contact on a consistent basis. He is absolutely terrorizing division one pitching this year and could be the best college hitter in the nation right now. He’s really improved his plate discipline this year, drawing 40 walks so far this season compared to just 23 last year. India’s maturity level this year has increased immensely. He’s been very patient and seldom chases pitches out of the strike zone. India is a solid runner on the basepaths with decent speed, evident by his 11 stolen bags this year.

Defensively, he’s been a stud this season with a .963 fielding percentage this year. He’s made just five errors at the hot corner. He has smooth hands and very good range to both sides. The 21-year old has above-average arm strength across the diamond as well. India has also played shortstop and second base in the past. Both positions are an option for India given what a big league team is in need of.

Big league comparison

If there was a big leaguer to compare India with, it would be Nolan Arenado. Obviously, Arenado is one of the best third basemen in the game and India hasn’t even been drafted yet. But India has a very similar swing to Arenado at the plate, and he plays outstanding defense just like the Rockies All-Star. India is projected to be a first-round pick and there’s a solid chance he could also win the golden spikes award, which notices the best amateur baseball player in college baseball. Arenado is an absolute gamer and comes to the field every day and plays his heart out. Jonathan India is the same way. The Florida third basemen is always fired up and ready to play 110 percent when he steps over those white lines.

India is performing at a high level both offensively and defensively in one of the best conferences in college baseball, the SEC. He is facing top-notch arms on a regular basis and lighting them up.

Jonathan India is the real deal, and a no-doubter to be off the boards in the first round of next month’s draft.
