Heliot Ramos 2017 MLB Draft Profile

Heliot Ramos 2017 MLB: A five-tool outfielder from Puerto Rico, the young Ramos has superstar potential. The only real question is where will he wind up.

Heliot Ramos might be just shy of 18-years-old, but he is certainly not short on talent. The young outfielder—whose older brother Henry Ramos currently plays for the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate—graduates from high school this year. He has committed to play at Florida International University; however this would not be the first time a prospect has committed to college only to embark on a Major League Baseball career a bit early.

Overview

The Maunabo, Puerto Rico native was a 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game first Team All-American. In last year’s Under Armour All-America Game, a prospect showcase, he went 3-for-3 and was a double shy of the cycle. His performance at the plate stole the show despite playing among other highly touted and much more developed prospects.

Strengths

Ramos seems at home at the plate and has graded well thus far. Perfect Game has his overall hitting rated at 8.5/10 and his power at a 10/10. Baseball America described him generally as a “toolsy outfielder,” since he is far more than just a hitter. Ramos’ mobility and range in the outfield, coupled with his arm strength, make him a well-rounded young prospect with superstar potential. This young right-handed hitter may or may not sign with the team that ultimately drafts him, but he has MLB talent written all over him.

Weaknesses

Considering his age, Ramos is still relatively raw and can certainly stand to benefit from more repetitions and the guidance of experienced coaches. Perfect Game has noted that while he is developing as a hitter, he can still get overaggressive at times. As a young prospect with the ability to hit the ball all over the field, he can certainly stand to develop an eye at the plate either at the collegiate or minor league level. Consistency is not a strength of his, but his combination of power and exceptional play in the outfield has shown that he has a tremendous upside nonetheless.
