Tottenham Talkline: A New Season, a New Start for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are now under new manager Mauricio Pochettino and looking forward to a brand new season, a new start.

Manager Pochettino will be looking for a good first impression at the club, by showing some perhaps exciting football in the pre-season friendlies. Although they are just friendlies after all and shouldn’t be used to judge a team’s success later on in the season, some of the players that haven’t made a brilliant first impression, or have had injuries which have hampered the chances of having one will be looking to have a better season, starting in August. Erik Lamela will be looking to put his injury-ridden first season at Spurs behind him. Some of his fellow team-mates who also joined with him last summer will be looking to do the same. Roberto Soldado is another man who is due to really show what he’s all about in the Premier League.

So, could this new season prove to be a successful one for the club? With new tactics, under a new manager and also the chance that last seasons signings (plus a few more maybe) will kick on and play to full potential, there’s scope to improve and hopefully aim for a good showing in the coming campaign. A top four finish is a target that Tottenham and it’s fans have been aiming to hit for a few seasons now. It’s another season where it may just happen, the club may just be able to play in the biggest European competition. But, there’s every chance that the FA cup or the League cup may be able to provide a bit of success too. Some fans would prefer silverware, others the joy of the Champions league again. Achieving both of those objectives would make it one of the best seasons in many years.

If Tottenham do want to have a solid season, then a leader must be prominent within the ranks. Michael Dawson is that man. Loyal, committed and willing to fight to the last breath. Yet some fans are beginning to chastise him as slow, worthless and surplus to requirements. A number of fans also believe Dawson is actually holding up incoming transfers by not leaving the club immediately… because that £4 million is really going to break the bank. Quite frankly, it’s poor from so called ‘supporters.’ To turn on a player that has refused to give up on a first-team place under old manager Andre Villas Boas, to prove himself a worthy player and a fantastic captain is wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and to voice the fact that Dawson is getting on a bit, and perhaps wasn’t as good as he was when partnered with Ledley King, but to vehemently declare over Twitter he is no longer wanted is not on at all.

Support has seemed to have wavered over the years, negativity replacing positivity, boo’s replacing cheers. A team will be affected by such an atmosphere. At the end of the day, as professional footballers, it should not get to them. However, having 30,000 plus fans lifting White Hart Lane off of its foundations is going to give those players a boost, a reason to give some more, an extra yard.

A new season approaches. Will it be a positive one for Tottenham Hotspur and their fans? It may be no more than a matter of opinion by the time the season has passed.
