The bizarre incident that occured during Tuesday night’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque and their opponents the Salt Lake Bees (Los Angeles Angels affiliate), has left catcher Miguel Olivo suspended, and 2nd baseman/shortstop Alex Guerrero undergoing reconstructive surgery on his left ear and will remain in a Salt Lake hospital for a couple of days (SIA Profile)
The teammates on the Albuquerque Isotopes got into a fight in the dugout during the 8th inning of Albuquerque’s 7-4 loss to Salt Lake. According to Guerrero’s agent, Scott Boras, Olivio bit off part of Guerrero’s ear in the scuffle. The team has suspended Olivo indefinitely pending an investigation.
The 35-year-old Olivo is a veteran catcher who has played parts of 13 seasons in the majors including eight games with the Dodgers this season. He is known for having a hot temper, such as when he charged at Jose Reyes and tried to punch him during a game between the Mets and Marlins in 2007.
Guerrero is a 27-year-old Cuban defector who signed 4-year $28 million contract with the Dodgers this summer. He lost out on the second base job in spring training to Dee Gordon, during spring training. Guerrero has started playing some short stop to become more versatile to the Dodgers. He is hitting .376 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs in the Pacific Coast League so far this season.
The Los Angeles Times reported the disagreement began with Olivo getting upset that Guerrero failed to tag out a runner after a throw from Olivo, according to Boras.
