Brian Cashman and The New York Yankees spent all last summer telling anyone who would listen that they planned to cut payroll and get below MLB’s luxury tax threshold for the 2014 season. However after missing the playoffs in 2013, they haven’t followed through on those plans, and instead have gone on one of the biggest spending sprees in MLB history.
This Offseason the Yankees have signed catcher Brian McCann, outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran, and star Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka. Combined four big contracts total $438 million, and when we add in the Yankees other more minor signings, they have signed deals worth $451 million this offseason. Add in another $20 million as a posting fee for Tanaka, and it is obvious that the Yankees have no problems paying MLB’s onerous luxury tax.
In New York, money is no object, and the Yankees will spend whatever it takes to win.
And hey, if they save $27 million on A-Rod’s suspension, thats just more money, for the aptly named GM Brian Cashman to spend.
