Drew Brees-us and his New Orleans Saints gave Who Dat Nation a reason to cheer as they marched into Atlanta and extinguished the Falcons, 17-13 on TNF.
At 2-9, it is the understatement of the year to say that the Dirty Birds are underachieving. With last year’s regular season success, it was widely anticipated that they would be at least “good” this time ’round, but nothing could be further from the truth. The team has played poorly, and it can’t be said enough just how important a piece Julio Jones is. With the young receiver out, Matt Ryan has turned into Captain Checkdown, last night being a prime example.
While Gonzalez has still been a favorite target for his quarterbacks, as he has been through his entire first ballot career, it’s just enough to be a “band-aid”. Last night he was targeted only 6 times, however, and caught 4 for 43 yards. To be fair, the Saints D have done a great job on tight ends all season long.
The season is a write-off, clearly, with absolutely no snowball’s chance in hell of making the post season. That said, there are still pieces there for next year to build from. With a healthy Jones, and a still fantastic pivot in Matt Ryan, the Dirty Birds should be back amongst the best of the Dirty South next year. And if Tony is back, he will be a much needed option.
