Bayern Munich have completed their pursuit of Barcelona striker, and Spanish Under-20 team member Thiago Alcantara signing the youngster to a 4 year deal today. According to a statement from Barcelona, they agreed to sell the youngster:
“FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich have reached an agreement over the transfer of the player Thiago Alcantara to the German club for a total of €25 million.”
After getting very little playing time with Barcelona last year, Alcantara upped his profile and his value with his dominant performance at the European Under 20 Championship. Alcantara scored a hat-trick in Spain’s victory in the final match versus Italy, in helping Spain to hoist the trophy.
Manchester United was rumored to be heavily interested in the striker, but recently new Bayern coach (and former Barcelona head man) Pep Guardiola started pursuit of the young budding star. The emergence of Bayern drove United off, and landed Alcantara for the Champions League winner out of Germany.
Bayern adds Alcantara to earlier purchase Mario Gotze in making it a successful summer of recruiting future talent.
“Thiago Alcantara was a player greatly coveted by our new head coach Pep Guardiola,” said Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “We’re delighted to be able to finalize this huge transfer. Thiago has just recently been selected as the best play at the U-21 European Championships. He’s a fantastic player with a lot of potential, who will undoubtedly make FC Bayern even stronger.”
Guardiola has stated that Alcantara will be his last major purchase of the summer.
Meanwhile new United boss David Moyes must move on to other targets in order to strengthen the Premier League Champions during the summer transfer window.
