Yankees take Two in Rain Shortened Series with Jays

The Blue Jays faced the New York Yankees again in the Bronx for a 3 game series this past weekend. The Jays came into the series on a four game winning streak, including two games where it seemed the offence was just toying with the San Franscisco Giants pitching. The first game against the Yankees however was not slugfest for Toronto, as they would lose 5-0 to the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers managed to hold the Blue Jays to only 4 hits that game, two from Melky Cabrera and two from Edwin Encarnacion. Yankees Starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda would get 8.0 innings strong with 2 hits against him, one walk and 5 strikeouts bringing his era down to 1.99, it would also be his 6th win of the season.

Mark Buehrle would pitch on the Toronto side and would pitch 6.0 innings and earn all 5 runs against him with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts, earning his third loss of the season. The Blue Jays would make a little bit of noise in the top of the ninth and have two runners on with two outs, but unfortunately JP Arencibia would pop out to end the game. Funny enough it was not Vernon Wells or Lyle Overbay who did the damage this time it would be Ichiro Suzuki and two new guys named Austin Romine and David Adams who did the most damage. This was one of those games where the Jays walked into a hot pitcher and just could nor support their pitchers with run support. Hopefully the second game will turn out much better for the Blue Jays!
The second game of the series the Jays looked to find their recent winning ways against the New York Yankees. They would have the same amount of hits as the Yankees  (8 Hits), but unfortunately the score was not in the Blue Jays favour as they would lose 7-2 to the Yanks once again. Robinson Cano can be blamed for the Jays woes, as he would hit two homeruns that game, one was a two-run shot in the bottom of the third and the other homer was another two run shot in the bottom of the 5th. If there was an upside to this loss it is the fact that Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay were not the reasons why the Jays lost.

Brendan Morrow was back pitching to the blue birds, but he was a none factor in this game as he would only manage 5.0 innings of work with 7 hits and 5 runs against him and he would only strikeout one batter, hopefully his next game will be better. The winning pitcher on the Yanks side was David Phelps, sound familiar? If you remember the last time the Jays were in New York Phelps would get his first win of the season against the Blue Jays, he is now 2-2 on the season both wins were against Toronto. The third and final game would be postponed due to rain in New York and will be played later in the season, most likely in August which is the next time Toronto visits the Yankees. Hopefully they will be challenging for a playoff spot (No I am not insane, I am being positive and a believer that they can turn this season around) the Jays now go back to Toronto to play three games against the Rays, 4 against the O’s and 2 against the Atlanta Braves.

Nicks Notes:

The Toronto Blue Jays picked up Thad Weber off of waivers and place Sergio Santos on the 60 day DL, not quite sure if we will see Santos pitch as a Jay any time soon.

Josh Johnson will make his first rehab start this upcoming Monday and hopefully he will be back in the rotation soon. If he is back and healthy and the Jays can string up more good games like they had against the Giants it could be a wild ride.

Melky Cabrera has been hot as of late when it comes to hitting. He is having a modest 6 game hitting streak and is 10-24 in those six games with an average over 400. Let’s hope the rest of the Jays can play the same way as Melky, because that could create some exciting baseball!
