My Pint's Half Empty on Man City

Look, I’m certainly not the only one who spotted potential difficulties with this Manchester City squad.  In fact, I’m sure the vast majority of footy fans could see this from a mile away.  You take a team with virtually NO historical significance, with their cross-town derby being the only blip on anyone’s radar, add a billionaire sheikh and voila, a “Superclub”.  The fact that they bowed out early in this year’s version of the UEFA Champions League isn’t the issue – the group after all was quite challenging.  What makes it a particularly hard pill to swallow for City fans is that manner in which they exited – basically, with their tails between their legs.  And don’t think I’m the only one sitting back applauding as I sip what’s left of my beer.

How does this sound – the two points that Man City earned in their Group is the worst result by any English side in the history of the group stage of the competition.  Take that, Mancini!

We’ve said it on our show (World Football Roundtable, airing every Monday and Thursday at 10pm EST) time and time again, buying a championship isn’t as easy as spending record amounts of cash come transfer time…though that has been known to help!  A well run club will consider group dynamics, which seems to be lost on the current squad.  Because of the fact that, individually, they have extremely talented players, it is enough to provide them with some success, as seen in their second spot in the Premier League table. But I would argue that it doesn’t always mean they will reach their potential, and it’s money spent stupidly.

Of course the four-headed beast up front are very talented – not even I can poke holes in that.  Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez are all legitimate scoring threats, and are certainly far from old – in fact, Tevez is the elder statesman and is 28, with Balotelli being the baby at 22.  The difficulty is that all four believe they need more time.  That, and they are mostly rich sucks.  City only plays two of them at a time, and naturally each believe they should be one of the two more often that not.  Is that causing problems?  I think it is… it must be like a soap opera at the Etihad some days.

Added to the problem is their personalities.  Certainly there are some very outspoken personalities who have little sense of tact it seems – Balotelli, while a great, funny follow on Twitter, is never shy to tell it like it is. Sounds like a good quality, and amongst us blokes it is, but it can prove costly in football where egos seldom fit through standard sized doors.  Tevez is, well, Tevez, and I don’t have the stamina to reiterate all the stupid things he’s done. Aguero had his own share of problems last month with his verbal lashing of Premier Leauge officiating, saying foreign players are treated unfairly.  It’s never a smart think to make officials look stupid.  And Nasri, whom I didn’t yet mention mostly because it pains me to even utter his name (as it does most Gooners) is just an idiot – a self-serving idiot.

It would seem that clubs can get away with haphazardly loading their talent pool at the league level – as I mentioned, City sits a few shy of the Red Devils in second spot in the EPL table, and that ain’t bad.  After all, the season is long, and having a litany of quality players to choose from each week is quite an advantage.  Even if they can manage to repeat as Premier League Champions, I wonder whether they, including their fans, would consider the season a success given their 1-0 loss to Dortmund, which sealed fourth spot and their way-too-early exit from CL play?  Certainly the mood around the Etihad Stadium is anything but cheerful.

Sadly, I would venture to guess that come spring time, this team is going to be vying for the Premier League crown.  If successful, I think fans might forgive their horrendous Champions League results.  But, if they fail to secure the trophy, panic and chaos will ensue.  Heads will roll.

I don’t like Manchester City because they stand for a growing problem in football – that is, paying astronomical sums, thereby driving prices to exorbinant levels, and demolishing the middle class.  Stockpiling talent is not new, I’m not that naive, it’s the financial implications that leaves me with such a bitter pill to swallow with the almost empty pint I have before me.

NFL Top and Bottom Power Rankings, Week 14

Week 13 has passed and things didn’t change as much as predicted. Most of the bad were bad, and most of the good were good.  So it’s not surprising that not much has changed in our Top and Bottom ranks – but we’ll check them out anyway.
Start with the no good, very bad and extremely ugly!

Blaine Gabbert, credit: Excel 23, Wiki CC

28 . Carolina Panthers – They lost an emotional battle in Kansas City. Now they are complaining about comments Matt Ryan Made about them back in week 4. Apparently this is fuel for them to beat the Falcons this coming week. HA! Good luck!  The Panthers are playing like garbage and now they’re talking trash. I think they’re just setting themselves up for embarrassment in their own backyard.  At least they can cook some mean ribs!

29. Oakland Raiders – This week they hosted Cleveland and lost. Yes, they failed to win against the Browns – at home.  Jebus.  Next week they host Denver, so to say they’re in big trouble is a big understatement. Are the Raiders going to win another game in 2012?

30. Philadelphia Eagles – The Eagles were recently bitten by the injury bug to go along with their new habit of blowing 4th qtr leads on Sunday Night Football, not to mention an 8-game losing streak! They are getting ready to battle the Jags and Chiefs for last place!  How exciting!

31. Kansas City Chiefs – Big win at home, and hats off to the club for being able to step on the field after Friday’s tragedy. Unfortunately it only puts them ahead of Jacksonville right now in their weekly “battle of the basement”.

32. Jacksonville Jaguars – 5 “B’s” – Beaten Badly By Bills = Basement! How’s that for alliteration.  This week they host the hurting New York Jets, but definitely don’t get too excited Jags fans.  Jags fans?  Hello, anyone?

I really wanted to add the Arizona Cardinals to the mix, but these teams won’t let me. Maybe next week!
Finally we can start talking football. Not much change up top either, but at least it’s fun to talk about good teams.

5. San Francisco 49ers – I still think very highly of the 49ers, and luckily they will not have to play St.Louis in the playoffs. Basically they need to redeem themselves at Candlestick Park on Sunday against the Dolphins, and then they have the big week 15 battle with New England where they need to show everyone what they got!

4. New England Patriots – The Patriots are on track and are definitely a SuperBowl contender as always! Next up is Monday Night Football facing the Texans at Gillett Stadium in the game of the year thus far. It is their chance to jump up the ranks and gain a shot at home field for the playoffs. This game is huge!

3. Denver Broncos – 9-3, with 7 wins in a row now, and sitting in a good situation.  If they beat the Raiders, as they should, they will benefit in the standings after the Pats and Texans are done slugging it out. Nobody wants to play Peyton Manning at Mile High Stadium in the post season!

2. Houston Texans – They play one tough game per month, but this time it’s on the Patriots’ turf on Monday Night Football. No need for explaining, just enjoy the game!

1. Dirty Birds – I don’t know why the Falcons aren’t #1 on everyone’s list. I say it time and time again, they know how to win the game in any situation! The Saints were starting to get a little dangerous again until they went down to Georgia on a Thursday nighter, where the Dirty Birds knew exactly what to do…. STOP DREW BREES!  Everyone knows how hard it is to stop Brees, but not only did the Falcons stop Brees they were the first team in 55 games to not allow him to throw a single touchdown pass. That’s an NFL record that they put an end to.

Things are getting very exciting, can you believe there is only four games left!?  There is still time for Baltimore, Green Bay and Chicago to climb ranks, though the Urlacher injury is like a shot to the crotch on a cold day.   Man, lots of contenders this year – I love it!

NCAA Basketball Rant of the Week: John Calipari and the One and Done

Rant of the Week: Kentucky’s current recruiting model  John Calipari has been a very successful head coach in the NCAA for a long time.  You can’t argue with the success Coach Calipari has had since arriving at Kentucky in April 2009 (Elite Eight, Final Four, Champions). I am ecstatic that he has helped so many young players realize their dream of becoming NBA players.  After one year of college ball, there are superstar freshmen that should definitely declare for the NBA draft, and there is so much talent out there that the overall quality of NCAA basketball would still be at an all-time high.

BUT… There shouldn’t be 4+ freshman leaving any one program in a season, especially for multiple years in a row.  As a fan I want to have juniors and seniors on my team in addition to those outstanding freshman.  For every Kyrie Irving there should be a Kyle Singler or J.J. Redick.  For every Marvin Williams there should be Ty Lawson or Tyler Hansborough.  Players you can identify with, watch improve, see develop a passion for the school name on the front of the jersey.   If I were a Kentucky fan I would be disappointed with my program, a program steeped in tradition and history, simply becoming an NBA training camp every year.  And I am glad to see Kentucky fall out off the top 25 for the first time since Calipari arrived, and hopefully it’s a wake-up for Coach Cal to balance things out in future years.  Kentucky needs to get themselves out of the “one and done” system for nearly every big important player on their team, and have a longer term approach for some of their core.

… and that’s the last word.

Eastern Promises: A Rose’s Early Bloom Shifts Balance of Power in NBA

Chicago, have you been naughty or nice this year? Boy, does Santa Claus have a present for you, Bulls fans. It’s twenty four years old, six foot three inches tall and is the face of your franchise. That’s right; Derrick Rose is set to return from injury early, in just a matter of weeks.

We all remember when it happened. Game One of the Eastern Conference Quarter Finals, Chicago versus Philadelphia. Derrick rose (excuse the pun) and came down hard in the dying minutes of the game and tore his ACL along with the Bulls championship hopes. Fans from every team cringed witnessing one of the greatest basketball players in the league falling in such agony, knowing exactly the detrimental effect it would have on the Bulls’ campaign.

It’s been eight months since the injury, and the Chicago Bulls have fought their way to a tie atop the Central Division, but are it is with a very mediocre eight win, eight loss record. Chicago seems desperate to get Rose and his leadership back into the team, but the organization hardly has the best record of minimizing its players’ injury risks. In fact, Chicago led by a significant amount in the dying minutes of the game Rose was injured in. Why on earth was he still on the court? Apparently they haven’t learned their lesson as Luol Deng played forty seven minutes in a game against the Bucks last week. Forty seven frickin’ minutes! Somebody tell this slave-driving coach his players aren’t building pyramids (actually, that’s a misnomer – the pyramids were built by paid workers, but you get the idea). It’s November. I would excuse idiocy in Game Seven of the Finals, but November?!

However, Rose may actually be ready for his return. He was sprinting in bursts after team practice on Monday and his lengthy rehabilitation process is reportedly in its closing stages. Bulls center Joakim Noah claimed that ‘Rose looks great in practice’, suggesting he believes the former MVP may be ready for return.

Only time will tell but the festive season will be a lot sweeter in the Windy City if Santa Claus does deliver this Christmas. It’s time for Derrick to rise. And yes, Lakers, Celtics, Knicks and Heat fans, be scared. This is one contender we shouldn’t have ruled out so early in the NBA season.

If Rose is one hundred percent, then the Bulls have just added a man who is arguably the NBA’s best point guard to a decent squad.  His presence is a true game changer, and shifts the balance of power in the NBA’s Eastern Conference.  The Bulls and Heat looked to be destined for an epic clash in last year’s playoffs when one play derailed all that for Chicago.  This year, there is reason to believe we may see that matchup.  Its one that NBA fans should look forward to.

Add to that the emergence of the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets this season, the ever-present threat of the Celtics, and Miami is not the only contender in the Eastern Conference.  It certainly makes for a more interesting playoff scenario than the one many anticipated in the summer.

Jack'd off! BCS Championship

You know what really Jack’s me off this time? The BCS National Football Championship being scheduled for January 7th.  Every year we find out at the beginning of December who we are going to see play in the BCS Championship bowl match, yet they make us wait more then a month to see the big game.  Brutal.

I don’t know about you, but I get antsy during the two-week gap the NFL has between the AFC/NFC Championship Games and the Super Bowl.  But at least I can understand the reasoning, and its only two weeks compared to a ridiculous five!

This year the wait Jack’s Me Off more than usual as I’m a big Fightin’ Irish fan.  The ‘Roll Tide’ fans and Dame haters, and I suppose the Jack Stone haters who will undoubtedly come out of the woodwork, have already started with the text messages after we found out Saturday night that Notre Dame will be playing Bama for the title.  My only response to the five-week gap and evil texters is that there is no sense getting hyped-up now.  Control your hormones for now.  Failure to do so will cause extreme boredom during weeks 2,3, and 4.  Oh, and maybe don’t operate heavy machinery (I feel a warning here is appropriate).

Five weeks is such a long time to wait, here are some things that can be accomplished in less than five weeks:

– The Entire NFL Preseason
– The Entire NFL Playoffs
– The Entire MLB Playoffs
– The Entire March Madness Basketball Tournament
– Three Rounds of NHL or NBA playoffs
– An Entire University Exam Period
– The Fifa World Cup
– An Olympic Games, followed by a Paralympic Games

Here are some things that are sure to happen in the next five weeks and will take my attention away from this game:

– Christmas, Hannukah
– New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Eve Eve, and New Year’s Day
– Boxing Day Sales
– The Birthday of one Ben Kerr
– The World Junior Hockey Championships
– The entire winter break in European Football
– The release of the Hobbit (well I don’t care, … but I’m told Mike Kovacs and the geeks are excited about this).

It’s madness to make people wait five weeks (did I mention the wait is five weeks?) between determining who will be the competitors in the National Championship game and actually playing that game.  Madness I tell you, and that is just one more thing that really Jacks me off.

To hear me rant about God knows what, catch my guest appearances on Last Word Radio in the show’s archives.

College Basketball Lecture Notes, December 5th

All right everyone, we have arrived at the quietest part of the NCAA basketball schedule. The pre-season tournaments are all complete, the inter-conference challenges are finished, and the student-athletes have to catch up on school work and prepare for exams.

So the truth is that there are slim pickings for big games the next couple weeks, but here is my pick for the best game of the week…

Game of the weekIllinois at Gonzaga, December 8

Illinois comes into the game undefeated (8-0) and ranked 13th in the country, however the record may be a bit inflated as they have only one quality win and that came against an unranked Butler squad.  They are led by three seniors, including Brandon Paul who is a dynamic scoring guard.

Gonzaga also comes into this game undefeated (8-0) and ranked 10th in the AP poll.  I find myself routing for Gonzaga every year, as they were the original upset special and because they always have prominent Canadians on their roster, including Kelly Olynyk and Pangos this year.  Gonzaga is the real deal and could definitely make a run during March Madness. I’m gonna take Gonzaga as my pick to win this one.

The first week in January marks the start of conference play, where there will be a whole slew of games to pick from.  Thought I would take this opportunity to spotlight some of the lesser known conferences out there before conference play begins.

Conference Spotlight: Mountain West Conference
The MWC has been a powerful mid-major conference for a number of years, and has provided us with many great March Madness moments in the last few years.  This year the conference has at least three teams that will be in the NCAA tournament, and as many as five.  The upper tier of teams are very talented and are definitely capable of beating virtually any team in the country on any given day, which makes them extremely dangerous during March Madness.  Here are the teams listed in my predicted order of finish:

1. UNLV- love the make-up of this team. They are quick, talented, defensive-minded, aggressive, and have leadership.  Expect big things from them during the Madness.
2. San Diego State- has become a staple in the tournament, but are not as good as last years team.
3. New Mexico- Solid in the backcourt, but lacking up front due to some injuries.
4. Wyoming- had a 20 win season last year, and returned ALL of their major players.  A force to be reckoned with and should get into the tournament.
5. Boise State- this is my surprise pick in the conference, and could get into the tournament, although 5 teams from the MWC will be tough.  7 of there 8 rotation players are back.
6. Colorado State- some studs in the post, but the perimeter players just aren’t good enough.
7. Nevada- opposite to CSU, all guards no bigs.
8. Air Force- respect what these guys do, but not enough firepower for the Falcons.
9. Fresno State- moved over from the WAC, and will be a tough transition with all the good teams in this league.

LWS’ pick for the 2012 Lou Marsh Award

As the end of 2012 approaches, the debate over who deserves to be named Canada’s athlete of the year begins to heat up. The Lou Marsh award will be voted on by a panel of Canadian journalists in December and is widely accepted as the honor given to the year’s top athlete, male or female, from the “Great White North”.

Last year Patrick Chan was the recipient after setting three world scoring records at the World Figure Skating Championships in a year that saw Chan as the overwhelming favorite for the award given his dominance in 2011. Though there were arguments for the likes of Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford and world champion shot-putter Dylan Armstrong, it soon became clear that Chan was the obvious choice.

This year, the field is fairly deep considering that it was an Olympic year and Canadian athletes in many sports established themselves as top performers in their respective disciplines. Depending on whom you ask or whether you trust Sportsnet, TSN or CBC there is a very diverse selection. So who is the top gun this year? Let’s go through some of the contenders:

Steven Stamkos: Though the 2012-13 season may not see a single skate hit the ice, hockey is still a factor in the race as Stamkos finished the 2011-12 season with 60 goals, joining Alex Ovechkin as the only two players to reach the mark since the early 90s when offense was at premium. Stamkos is the top hockey contender given Sidney Crosby’s health issues. The bad taste the NHL is leaving in many fans and journalists’ minds, however, will be costly for Stamkos’ pursuit.

Georges St. Pierre: A staple in the Lou Marsh discussion, especially according to Sportsnet, GSP has never won the award and this year will likely be no exception, having only fought once (spectacular a performance as it was) in 2012 and with the continued lack of mainstream acceptance of MMA, St. Pierre will likely have to wait another year to be considered for the award.

Joey Votto: 2010’s winner had another great season in 2012, though it didn’t gain him an MVP as it did the year he was named top Canadian. Despite Votto being the best Canadian in baseball, he will likely not win his second Lou Marsh.

Patrick Chan: A repeat win is in the cards for Chan as he claimed another world title in 2012. He is still figure skating’s best, but in the last 50 years only one person has repeated as Lou Marsh award winner (Ben Johnson) and the writers may be reluctant to give Chan back to back awards due to the depth of this year’s field.

The above names are all legitimate contenders along with honorable mentions to Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir as well as Kaillie Humphries. But I would like to now present the names who I believe are the true finalists for the award based not only on performance but also what they have done to establish Canada in their sport this year.

Rosie MacLennan: A lot would need to go right for a trampoline athlete to win the Lou Marsh as it isn’t the most popular sport around. That said,  MacLennan has certainly upped the sport’s profile in Canada. As Canada’s one and only Olympic Gold Medalist in London, she overcame immense pressure and powerful competition from the dominant Chinese in her sport. Being the lone Canadian to give her country the gift of hearing “Oh Canada” at arguably the world’s biggest sporting event, is on its own worthy of a spot as a finalist for the award.

Milos Raonic: Canada and singles tennis success haven’t been synonymous historically, until Milos burst onto the scene. Though Milos has not dominated his sport like Chan or GSP, he has put Canada the highest it has ever been in ATP Tennis, closing the year at number 13 in the world, a place no other Canadian has reached since the current ranking system began. Breaking new ground in a sport which is recognized not only in North America but around the world is why I believe Milos belongs as a finalist.

Ryder Hesjedal: Had Ryder won the Tour de France, It would be difficult to write this article because the discussion would be a lot shorter. Ryder however did win the Giro d’Italia, which along with the aforementioned Tour de France and also the Tour of Spain comprise cycling’s Grand Tours. A victory in any of these races, cements a cyclist in the conversation with the best in the world. In winning the first of these three grueling races, Hesjedal did what no Canadian had ever done, which is astonishing considering that the Grand Tours date back to the early 1900s. Much like tennis, cycling is also a world recognized sport which lends further support to Ryder getting the Lou Marsh.

Christine Sinclair: I’ve decided to save the best for last and, in my opinion, this year’s Lou Marsh award winner, soccer superstar Christine Sinclair. All of the components are there for her to take the award. She is among if not the best in the world at her sport, which is probably the most recognized in the world. She performed brilliantly under pressure in front of a billion viewers (live and on TV) at the Olympics. The most important factor however is her passion for Canada and how she rallied the whole country together this summer with her energy, leadership and class. She embodies what it is to be Canadian in so many ways and that is why Canada’s flag bearer at the Olympic Closing ceremonies should be crowned Canada’s top athlete in 2012.

Lebron James named Sportsman of the Year

credit: Keith Allison, Wiki Commons,

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse. He’d already taken the MVP award, earned his first ring and (arguably) led Team USA to Gold Medal victory in the London Games; all in one year. Now in the closing weeks, Lebron has been named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year.

The first Miami Heat player since Dwayne Wade (2006) to receive the prestigious accolade, Lebron joins the ranks of Bill Russell (1968), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1985), Michael Jordan (1991) and Tim Duncan (2003); some of the greatest basketball players to ever play.

James told Associated Press this morning “I remember signing here (Miami) just like yesterday and the roof basically caving in” – referring to the infamous ‘Decision’ he made to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010. “To see that I and my team and everyone around me were able to patch that roof up, to come to this point and receive this award, it’s huge”.

Sports Illustrated’s Paul Fichtenbaum claimed, “Lebron made it easy on us”, and mentioning that there was nobody more deserving of the award. After dominating the sport for the entire year, it is certainly indisputable that there is no NBA player more worthy of the accolades Lebron James is receiving.  Well certainly the best NBA player this calendar year, I do believe that Usain Bolt, and Michael Phelps could also have been considered for Sportsman of the Year, and it’s not as clear cut as Fichtenbaum claims.  Lebron is a deserving winner, but not the only contender for the award.

Don’t get me wrong. As an ex-Cavaliers fan, I still have a grudge. It was tough to watch Lebron abandon the Cavs and leave to play in Miami with Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade.  But maybe it’s time to move on and let the King sit peacefully in his rightfully earned throne.

And that is the last word…
