Peyton Manning – "Guess Who" He Will Sign With!

Everyone saw what happened.  The Colts went from a 10-6 team that hadn’t missed the playoffs in 9 seasons to a 2-14 squad that had to pick up some garbage wins down the stretch just to avoid the dreaded 0-16.  Was it all Peyton?  Well, yeah, it kind of was.

It wasn’t the fact that they went from an all-star quarterback to a league-average quarterback.  It was the fact that they went from one of the all-time best quarterbacks to a league-worst echelon quarterback. That change alone was enough to knock the franchise off their AFC South pedestal and cause management to throw their team into rebuilding mode when they realized just how poor they were.

It needs to be stated that this Colts team was already in decline.  They were not the Super Bowl team of 2006, or the 14-2 squad of 2009.  In 2010 some of the Colts’ flaws started to show.  They started the season only 8-6 and had to win their last 4 to get in the playoffs where they promptly lost at home to the Jets.  This was not a case of going first to worst because of one player.  But if Manning was healthy it is exceedingly likely the Colts would have battled the Texans down to the wire for the AFC South crown.

When has another player that can change a team so dramatically with his absence ever hit the free agent market?  Wherever Manning decides to sign there is no telling just how good he will instantly make that team.  Would Tampa Bay suddenly make the post-season? Would the Bills end a 12 year playoff drought just like that?  Would Manning put the Jets over the top? I don’t know, but anything is possible with this guy.

Manning is such a force that I think nearly everybody in the league should be after his talents.  Manning gives any team a legitimate shot at winning a championship and that is all that matters.  When you see that chance, you have to take it. That’s why I think nearly every team in the league should be after him. Let’s play a game.  Let’s pretend that every team is interested.  How would Manning finally decide where he wants to play?

Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready to play “Guess Who”, Manning-style?

Question 1. Did your team just release me, a player they must believe is the best player of all-time?

That’s you Colts.  What are these guys thinking?  This is Peyton Manning.  Their franchise was nothing before they got him.  Last season he signed a big contract and wanted to finish his career as a Colt.  I can’t believe that Indy would make a financial decision to get rid of him.  Even if they want to rebuild, even if they really believe in Andrew Luck.  Peyton Manning should have always been a Colt and it is ridiculous this franchise thinks they will be okay while moving forward.

There are a few positions in sports where players can continue to play very late into their careers. We have seen some hockey players play into their 40’s.  We also just witnessed Chris Chelios, an all-star defenseman, attempt to play until the age of 50.  Many pitchers in baseball extend their careers into their 40’s now, too.  NFL quarterback in one position where you can keep performing well past your prime.  We have seen Dan Marino start until the age of 38.  Brett Favre just retired after playing a season at the age of 41.  Warren Moon and Vinny Testaverde were in the league until the age of 44, Moon even started games at the age of 42.  These are all athletes that began their careers in the 80’s for the most part.  Peyton Manning began his career nearly 20 years later.  He is one of the best ever at his position, and aside from his recent injury he is one of the most durable players ever.

What if he signs a 5 year contract and when he gets to the end of it he decides he wants to keep playing?  Athletes in the last 15-20 years have enjoyed every advantage possible to keep their bodies in great shape.  Pretty soon the 2000-era professional athletes will be turning 40.  Maybe they will realize that they don’t feel a lot different than when they were 37 and they can keep going for many more years.  The Colts are giving up on all of this just because they need to rebuild.  Good Luck (no pun intended). 31 teams left.

Question 2. Does your team already have an elite QB?

Goodbye New England, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Green Bay, New Orleans, Carolina and the Giants.  For the record these are the only 7 teams I give a pass to for not pursuing Peyton with everything they have.  Even San Diego I am on the fence with, but there is no way AJ Smith would target Peyton after Eli spurned him in the 2004 draft.  Yes I think AJ Smith is the type of guy who would intentionally make his team worse over a personal grievance.   24 teams left.

Question 3. Are you already committed to a player you think is an elite QB?

Philly, Dallas, Chicago, Detroit and the Jets.  It is tough to blame these teams I guess, but remember only one of these teams made the playoffs last season – as a 6th seed.  For the record I think the Jets really wanted Manning (like Washington) but they learned early on they really weren’t in the running. 19 teams left.

Question 4.  Does your team play in the NFC East or AFC South?

Tony Dungy said he doesn’t believe Peyton would sign with a team that would make him compete directly with his brother for a playoff spot, and Manning himself said he will always be a Colt (and meant it).  I can’t see him signing in either of these divisions, call this the “conflict of interest” question. Even if this wasn’t the case is there really any chance he would sign with the Redskins as was widely reported?  They have no pieces on offense for Manning to get excited about. I think he cares about his numbers too much to do that to himself.   I really thought Houston could be a player in this race though in spite of their division. If they landed Manning then Washington seemed like a possible trading partner for current QB Matt Schaub.  But the Redskins pulling off the big trade with the Rams changes all that. This leaves us with 15 teams left.

Question 4. Is your franchise way too dysfunctional / far away from a championship for me to even consider?

This is a fun list.  Buffalo, Oakland, Cleveland, Cincy, Minnesota, St. Louis and Tampa can all count themselves out of the race before it even begins. We’re down to the Elite 8.

Question 5.  Can I picture myself playing in your style of offense?

We are getting down to the tough cuts now.  Baltimore and San Fran have not shown much interest.  Even if they do I don’t know if I can picture Manning playing in those offenses.  They are both run-oriented teams that have significant investments on the defensive side of the ball.  San Fran especially does not appear to have any wide receiving options for Manning to work with and they would have to agree to bring someone else in to entice Manning to sign. KC and Seattle also need to be crossed off the list.  They are reportedly pursuing Peyton but I don’t see them having what it takes to get a deal done.  KC is more interesting because they have Jamaal Charles returning and can team Peyton with Dwayne Bowe and second year receiver Jonathan Baldwin, but I think there are better options available to Manning and I’m sure he would like to avoid the KC snow storms if he could. Final Four. Denver, Miami, Arizona and our surprise 16-seed making it all the way to the big dance, Atlanta.

Is your team currently pursing me?

The Falcons decided last offseason that they needed to be more explosive on offense and committed several draft picks to acquire Julio Jones.  Jones was a good player but not much changed for the Falcons offense, and once they got to the playoff the results we’re the same as in the past.  Manning is an instant solution to make their team more explosive, and if you team him with Jones and Pro Bowl receiver Roddy White then Atlanta might have the most unstoppable offense in the league.  Throw in the fact that Atlanta is a warm weather city, they play in a dome, they have an established GM/coach and they are already a perennial playoff threat with an improving young defense and there is really nothing for Manning not to like about the Falcons.  So the hold-up obviously is that Atlanta already has Matt Ryan.  This was already going to be decision time for the Falcons regarding Matt Ryan because his rookie contract expires soon.  The Falcons have to decide to make a huge financial investment in Ryan or lose him.  In most situations they would be forced to re-sign Ryan because he is a good quarterback and even if they might not totally believe he can win them a Super Bowl they know he is better than the other available options.  Not this time.  The other available option is staring them right in the face.  If they get Manning they can turn around and trade Ryan to a number of teams with QB needs and likely get a first round pick in return. Or they could even keep Ryan as insurance incase the Manning plan does not work.  Either way this is one team I am surprised has decided to sit this race out. Cross Atlanta off.

Is your owner completely insane?

Miami seems to be the popular top choice for Manning to land.  I just don’t see it.  Manning more than anything wants to land with a stable franchise that he believes will be able to build a winning team around him.  I believe these factors far outweigh what division he plays in or what the weather will be like at kick-off in December.  Manning knew his release was coming and has certainly done his research on every team he felt would show interest in him.  When he is done his homework is he going to believe the Miami owner and management have what it takes to build a winner around him? No way.  Stephen Ross hasn’t pleased many Dolphins fans since he took over the organization, and in his dealings with the media and meddling with the franchise he has to remind many people of another owner; Dan Snyder.  Manning doesn’t want any part of this, there are better options out there.  Remember when Eli refused to go to the Chargers in the 2004 draft because he did not like the direction of the franchise?  Don’t think this is not the top priority on Manning’s list.  Beyond the ownership Miami is not in great football shape right now either.  They are the 3rd string team in their division and they are in between coaches.  Even if Miami were to sign Manning they would still be behind New England in their division likely forcing them to fight for a Wild Card spot.  Not a situation Manning wants to be a part of. Miami is sunk.

Can I really see myself wearing your jersey?

I really didn’t expect the Broncos to be this involved in the race.  Like KC I thought there would be some attractiveness about signing in Denver but the weather and offense would eventually lead him to go in another direction.  But Elway has been doing his best to make his magic happen one last time and they also have a very solid coach in John Fox that can only help the situation.  It is interesting that it appears San Fran has mostly stood on the sidelines in this chase because the have professed their support for Alex Smith and they preached a team first message all season long.  They are afraid how a Manning chase would impact the locker room and distort their message.  The Broncos locker room rallied around the unique talents of Tim Tebow last year and he lead them to a playoff spot, and a playoff victory, in his first season as a starter.  It will be interesting to see how this pursuit impacts the Broncos team dynamic in the upcoming season, especially considering the fact they aren’t going to land Manning. Goodbye, Broncos.

Are you Arizona?

Unless the Falcons jump into the race than Peyton Manning is going to be an Arizona Cardinal.  I know they paid a steep price to acquire Kevin Kolb last season but he failed to impress in the limited time he had to prove himself.  The Cardinals are being smart and not letting their earlier commitment to Kolb stand in their way.  There is plenty for Manning to like about the Cardinals.  It all starts with Larry Fitzgerald.  What quarterback wouldn’t want to play with him?  Manning can look back to the success Kurt Warner had playing with Fitzgerald and envision the same thing for himself. He can even look to the Tom Brady – Randy Moss hook-up and start dreaming big about launching 80 yard TD passes to Fitzgerald. The Cardinals also have a very secure head coach with Ken Whinsenhunt.  Whinsenhunt and his team have done a good job turning around the Cardinals franchise and I think this will be a big factor in Manning’s decision.  The division they play in will be a factor too.  It is well known the NFC West is the worst division in football.  With the emergence of San Fran and some of the moves the Seahawks and Rams have made recently that may be changing.  But none of these moves can compete with landing Peyton Manning, who will instantly vault the Cardinals into playoff competition with the 49ers next season and leave the other teams scrambling.  When you factor in the Cardinals brand new dome stadium, the fast field they play on and the beautiful weather in Arizona you can see why Arizona has to be the front-runner. Now here is the hammer. I know the Cardinals don’t have the most cap room available, but they can release Kolb with little financial ramifications.  Also, beyond Larry Fitzgerald at one receiver spot the Card’s don’t have many positions on offense they wouldn’t be willing to replace.  See where I am going with this?  Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Jeff Saturday.  If the Cards need a little extra help convincing Manning to sign they can throw one of these names on the table.  Maybe they can’t get them all. But landing Jeff Saturday could not be that tough, and Dallas Clark would be worth much more to the Cardinals than any other franchise.

Whatever happens the other 3 teams in the division Manning signs with will immediately have to re-evaluate their playoff chances and the way they scheme on defense.  And if Manning stays healthy for a full season it should be interesting to re-visit this situation at this time next year and make fun of all the teams who thought they would be better off not going after Peyton Manning.

…and that is the last word.

Serie A Review of week 26, and week 27

Serie A Review of Week 26

Before reviewing last weekend’s action in the Serie A, I would like to congratulate AC Milan for qualifying for the Champions League quarterfinals with a 4-3 aggregate score even though the Rossoneri were punished 3-0 against Arsenal in London. Hopefully, Allegri and his men learn from their mistakes.

Speaking of the Diavoli of Milano, last weekend at the Stadio Renzo Barbera in Palermo, AC Milan crushed the Rosanero with a 4-0 thumping thanks to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic hat trick. Ibra was coming off a 3-game ban. Perhaps he should be suspended more often? Thiago Silva added a goal to the tally.

Internazionale FC took on Catania Calcio at the San Siro in Milan. The Nerazzurri stopped their losing streak with a come-from-behind tie. Catania were leading 2-0 early on in the encounter. Then, the Diegos of Inter took control of the reigns as Diego Milito and Diego Forlan squared it all for the Beneamata.

Juventus remains undefeated with yet another 1-1 tie with Chievo Verona at the Juventus Stadium in Turin.  The Bianconeri are also winless in the last 4 games which includes the Old Lady’s tie in the make-up game against Bologna FC in midweek action.  Juve now trail AC Milan by two points in the Scudetto race.

Udinese – Atalanta ended in a scoreless draw. Atalanta keeper Andrea Consigli made incredible saves to keep the game level.

The Roman Derby, aka the derby of the Capitale. In my opinion, this Derby was ruined! AS Roma’s goalkeeper, Maarten Stekelenburg was sent off in the seventh minute reducing the Giallorossi to 10 men. The Lupi scrapped it out with Lazio but the Biancocelesti still prevailed with a 2-1 win thanks to goals by Hernanes and Stefano Mauri. Italian International youngster, Fabio Borini, temporarily equalised the match for Roma.

WEEK 27 Preview

Two matches have already been played on Firday afternoon as Napoli hosted Cagliari at the San Paolo Stadium and Chievo Verona welcomed winless Inter to the Bentegodi. It was a 9-goal thriller in Naples as Walter Mazzarri’s men ran out victors 6-3. It was Napoli’s sixth consecutive win and is now pushing for a third-place finish. Hopefully this wine will serve as a confidence booster for the crucial game against Chelsea in their upcoming Champions League match. Inter finally ended their winless drought with a 2-0 victory over Chievo Verona. Hopefully, this will instil some much needed confidence in the Nerazzurri for their midweek Champions League return match against Olympique Marseille.

Atalanta host Parma Sunday afternoon at the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia. Roberto Donadoni’s Parma are looking to put their poor form as of late behind them with a must win as the Gialloblu sit one point above the relegation zone.

Palermo v Roma will be an exciting matchup. Both teams will aim to get back up on their feet as the Giallorossi lost a hard fought battle against Lazio last week. The Rosanero were embarrassed at home by Milan and will therefore want to improve their performance in front of their home fans.

Lazio v Bologna. Lazio is aiming for the final Champions league spot but may also push for second as the Biancocelesti are only four points behind Juventus. It will be tough to keep pace against a stubborn Bologna side.

Genoa v Juventus.  The Grifone have had an up-and-down season. At times, Genoa look like they can beat anyone, and at times it’s like they didn’t even show up! Which Genoa will perform in this fixture? Juventus will want to shake off what the Italians call pareggite, which means the tie disease. Juve are still undefeated this season but are levelled with 13 wins and 13 ties. The Bianconeri will be looking to notch up another number in the win column. The Old Lady has tied her last four games. For those who play ProLine, this may very well be Juve’s first loss of the season.

Milan v Lecce. The last time these two teams locked horns, Lecce had a 3-0 lead but then Kevin Prince Boetang took over and scored a hat trick in 15 minutes in the second half with Antonio Cassano bagging the winner. This time around, Lecce is depleted and Milan is upset with what happened in London in midweek. I expect a huge scoreline in Milan’s favour.

THATS THE LASTWORD!

Derby Trail Rundown

There’s something to say about anything pretty; there’s pretty flowers, girls, pictures, landscaping, but I tell you this, I don’t call many horses pretty. Hansen on the other hand is something else to look at. He is a very pretty horse and have I mentioned he can run!

Taking the Gotham Stakes last weekend with sure brilliance and placing him right on track for the Derby. He learned to relax in the middle of the race, sit behind the leaders, and when it was time to run it was like Dominguez didn’t even have to tell him. He pulled away by three lengths and maintained that throughout the stretch-run.

In behind Hansen was My Adonis, who beat the rest of the field very easily and looks to be on way to securing one of the 20 spots come the first Saturday in May. The big surprise to me about In the Gotham was the payoff of the exactor, even though there were 13 horses in the race, it seemed to be a two-horse race, and the exactor payed $17. If we could only know the future……. Sigh.
Coming up this weekend there are a few more key races and leading horses ready to do battle on the oval tracks. In California, the San Felipe Stakes is being held on Saturday at Santa Anita while at the same time the Tampa Bay Derby will be running. Gulfstream Park also has two three-year old races this weekend, one going seven furlongs, the Swale, and the other over the grass in Miami, the Palm Beach Stakes!

California here we come! And so does a very tough field of 10 horses. Creative Cause stretching back out, Liason after his horrible mishap clipping heals last race, Rousing Sermon looking to continue his closing ways, I’ll Have Another, Empire Way, Midnight Transfer, and Bodemeister. I missed a couple who also have an honest shot to win; the favorite in this race might be 4-1. This tells me it’s a gamblers race to win, you just have to pick the winner cause the payouts in this one should be very nice.

The Tampa Derby on the other hand is not looking quite the same. Projected favorite Spring Hill Farm is looking like the choice and very tough to beat on Saturday for Todd Pletcher. The other eleven horses running will be doing their best to beat Spring Hill Farm to the wire and snap his perfect record this far. The Canadian Connection is back and looking to have as big of shot as any to pull off the upset with Prospective, once again being ridden by Contreas for Casse and already has a race over the Tampa Bay Race Track. Along with other favorites Take Charge Lady and Battle Hardened it will be interesting to see how this one ends up.
Some heavy favorites seem to be set to run their biggest career race at Gulfstream Park Saturday and Sunday. Ever So Lucky with a very impressive last breeze looks to clean up in the Swale Stakes and should be low odds and in my mind victorious in the seven furlong event. On Sunday it’s the Palm Beach Stakes on the grass! Dullahan, another Dale Romans trained horse looks to be his best three years old he’s got. When the wire comes and Dullahan pulls off the victory then a big question for him is how he would handle the dirt course of Churchill downs in the Derby. Another busy weekend, lots of hopefuls, and great cards of racing!!!

Is New York Big Enough for TWO Mannings?

There could not be a nicer way to begin your spring break than by reading an article about the quarterback with the laser-rocket arm, the four-time MVP, the Super Bowl winner, Peyton Manning.

“I will always be a Colt, and that will never change.” Now, although that may be figuratively true, we officially know that Peyton Manning is no longer a part of the Indianapolis Colts organization. This was made known to the public during the joint press conference that Jim Irsay, the Colts owner, and Peyton held on Wednesday afternoon. The press conference lasted approximately 30 minutes long, after which something very strange occurred, something that the NFL had never seen before: Peyton Manning, arguably the greatest quarterback of all-time, became a free agent.

As most of you who have been following this whole Peyton Manning ordeal may already know, the four-time MVP has been subject to four neck surgeries throughout the course of the last two years. Obviously, as a free agent, that is going to be a big red flag for teams who may want to go after this all-pro quarterback. Even still, reports are being leaked that numerous, about twelve, teams have sought out to acquire Peyton. One of the teams being the New York Jets.

Three years ago, the Jets drafted a quarterback out of USC named Mark Sanchez. And during his first two seasons, Mark led the Jets to the playoffs. Unfortunately, last year, due to a multitude of mediocre performances by Mark himself, the New York Jets did not make the playoffs. Mark has been seen as a very inconsistent quarterback during his early NFL career and whispers are coming out of New York that they may want a quarterback change. What better quarterback to switch to than the man himself, Super Bowl winner, Peyton Manning.

Manning does have some ties to New York, with the obvious tie of course being the fact that his brother Eli is currently the quarterback for the New York Giants. Also, long time Colt offensive coordinator Tom Moore, is currently the senior offensive assistant/offensive consultant for the New York Jets. Would New York be big enough for two Mannings?

Logically speaking of course, Eli would probably welcome Manning to New York with open arms as this would unite the brothers in one state instead of the family being separated throughout all of America. Newspaper wise, this Manning duo would “blow the roof off the place.” The media would salivate at the thought about creating articles about Eli & Peyton Manning. Rex Ryan, coach of the Jets, welcomes the idea of bringing in Manning and word is out of the Jets’ locker room that the players would not mind the switch either.

Today, Friday March 9th, reports are saying Peyton is visiting with the Denver Broncos as Peyton is close with John Elway and would like to begin this process by visiting with someone who he knows. I believe it is only a matter of time before the Jets’ organization decides to schedule a meeting with Manning and if all goes well in the “Big Apple”, we may soon find out if New York is big enough for both Peyton and Eli Manning.

A Guide To March Madness

NCAA Final Four

When my wife and I first started dating, I warned her up front: for all of March, I become a crazy sports lunatic – more so than usual – and can not be disturbed every week through Thursday – Sunday. I have since dragged her into my little world of crazy – she is an Ohio State fan – so at least now I have someone to join in my month-long episode of yelling rants and curses at the TV.

This post is meant to be a guide for those that either have a passing interest in the game and look to learn more or for those looking to brush up on how it all works for their office pool. Welcome to the show.

What is “March Madness”?

“March Madness” is an informal term for the NCAA Division I Men’s College Basketball National Championship Tournament (say THAT five times fast). The term refers to the tournament being played throughout March (weekly, Thursdays through Sundays), culminating in the Final Four and National Championship at the beginning of April.

How many teams are in this tournament?

In 2012, 68 teams will be selected/given automatic bids to enter. The teams are seeded 1 through 16, in each of the four “regions”, with the winners of each region meeting in New Orleans for the “Final Four”.

How are teams selected or given automatic bids?

Thirty one teams are given automatic bids for winning their respective conference tournaments. A list of current automatic bids/conference tournament winners is available on CBS. The remaining 37 slots are filled by a Selection Committee on “Selection Sunday” (March 11, 2012), based on a team’s season. One of the main tools used by the Committee is the Ratings Percentage Index, a measurement of each team’s wins and losses when compared with strength of schedule.

How are teams seeded in each region?

Each region is seeded by the Selection Committee on Selection Sunday, based on their RPI and play in conference tournaments. Unlike football, the rankings handed out throughout the season (AP Poll, Coaches’ Poll, etc) have no bearing on the seedings during the tournament. Since 2011, the weakest eight teams as deemed by the Committee, play in the “First Four” with the four winners being formally entered into the bracket. The top seeds (#1 – #4) are generally given games closer to home for the first two rounds.

What does a bracket look like?

Below is a sample bracket of the tournament from 2011. Take note of the most important factor, and why this is called “The Madness”: there is no consolation round. One loss and your season is over. If you have a bad shooting day, your defence doesn’t play like it should, or a million other things than can (and will) go wrong on any given day; they all result in a long bus ride home.

Sample Bracket, 2011

What is a “Cinderella Team”? What is the lowest seed ever to make it to the Final Four?

The term “Cinderella” is usually given to a lower seed (greater than #10) that wins their first two games over higher-ranked opponents. The lowest seed to ever make the Final Four was a #11, which has occurred three times: LSU (1986), George Mason (2005) and Virginia Commonwealth University (2011). The lowest seed to ever win a National Championship was #8 Villanova, in 1985.

When are the games played? What’s this “Sweet Sixteen” nonsense?

The “Sweet Sixteen” is the name given to the Round of 16. Currently, each round is nicknamed the following, with teams remaining and days played in brackets:
– First Round (68; Tuesday after Selection Sunday)
– Round of 64 (64; Thursday and Friday after Selection Sunday)
– Round of 32 (32; Saturday and Sunday after Selection Sunday)
– “Sweet Sixteen” (16; Thursday and Friday, second weekend)
– “Elite Eight” (8; Saturday and Sunday, second weekend)
– “Final Four” (4; Saturday, third weekend)
– “National Championship” (2; Monday, day after third weekend)

Got any other notes/tips for my office pool?

– A #16 seed has never beat a #1. Ever. So, don’t even bother picking it.
– All four #1 seeds in the Final Four has only ever happened once, in 2008. So advancing all four #1s to the Finals may not be the best choice.
– “There are 2^63 or 147,573,952,589,676,412,928. (9.2 quintillion) possibilities for the possible winners in a 64 team NCAA bracket, making the odds of randomly picking a perfect bracket 9.2 quintillion to 1.” (Wikipedia) So when one of your teams loses, rest assured, you still have a chance.

March is my favourite time of year. It’s getting warmer out, the birds start singing and you never know when a #12 will drop a #5 from the tournament like a bad habit. And it all begins this Sunday.

Let The Madness begin.

… and that’s the last word.

Toronto "Welcomes" Beckham, Landon, Keane, et al

Despite Los Angeles equalizing with just a minute to go, Toronto FC need to hold their heads high, as do “most” of the fans in attendance.

After TFC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, the Galaxy, lead by the recently departed Everton striker Landon Donovan, the sure-footed Robbie Keane and the set-piece master David Beckham, stormed back in the second half.  With just a couple of minutes to go, LA earned a corner, where Beckham set up office.  Unfortunately some idiot decided it important enough to throw a beer can (empty or not!) at the former England mid, who picked it up and emphatically waved it at the official.  Beckham then hit a hard corner into the box, the ball rattled around a bit, and was knocked home by Donovan.  Both players then made it quite clear to the fan that threw the can that revenge was theirs.

Despite this hiccup, the night was ultimately a great success.  The almost 48,000 fans in attendance were loud, excited and very much into the game.  The Red Patch Boys and U-Sector, two of TFC’s supporters clubs, were very vocal in leading the Rogers Centre faithful.

Months ago I questioned Toronto fans love affair with soccer, and whether it would fizzle.  While I sat on the fence, I am now leaning on the side that has soccer as a growing sport in North America.  They are drawing better quality players, even if they are BPL cast-offs.  The three aforementioned Galaxy players, along with Koevermans, Frings and perhaps Frei for TFC, could all play in Europe somewhere.  I am slowly becoming an MLS convert, whether it ever becomes an elite league or not.

…and that is the last word.

What Do You Like About Sports?

Are you an adrenaline junkie craving fast-paced action?  Or maybe you are a fan of slow, methodical, yet graceful sports?  Do bone-jarring hits float your boat?  Simply, what do you get from watching sports?

As my character would indicate, I am a very eclectic sports fan.  That is, I like aspects of all of the above. I like the speed with which hockey is played.  The relatively few stoppages gives an “edge-of-my-seat” feeling.  The continuously changing camera angles act much like a roller coaster, as one is never really sure where the puck will end up.  At the speed at which the game is played, hockey is one of those sports that make you pay for getting off your couch to grab another drink.  I always marvel at how these athletes can fearlessly fly around the ice as they do.  The game is changing, mind you, and I can’t say it is for the better.  Truth be told, I watch less hockey now than I did a decade or two ago.

The beautiful game is fast becoming my “thing”.  As a latecomer to the its fandom, having only been watching passionately for the past seven seasons, it teeters on the brink of being an art form for me.  Really.  The ebbs and flows to the game really hook me in, and just as I marvel at the triangle passing, someone will lob a ball into the perfect position for some striker to crush it past the keeper (Yes, I was describing Van Persie’s goal versus Liverpool last Saturday).  Football is more than just a sport – it is a culture.  Okay, there is diving.  I get it.  It used to really frustrate me, and still does to some extent, but if you can realize that it is part of the culture of the sport it won’t detract from the fact that soccer is the by far the biggest sport on earth, and it’s not even close, and there are many reasons why.  Sorry golf fans.

Football, as in the North American version, has been my bread and butter since I was a wee lad.  Having season tickets to the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats since I was six years old, I grew up with the game, rarely missing action at the stadium or on television.  I was so enamored that I even worked as the club’s “Equipment Boy” when I was in high school.   Unlike hockey, there are many stoppages in play.  The reason?  Well there are several, but most importantly to strategize.  I am the epitome of what it means to be an armchair quarterback.  I am always trying to look at the game from a different perspective – sometimes I’ll focus on the quarterback, other times I will key in on a defensive back, and still others I will see who is winning the battle in the trenches.  The competitive nature comes out in me, and football satisfies that perfectly.

So, what sports float YOUR boat?

Peyton to be Released – Are You Really Surprised?

Not being a big Peyton Manning fan, or a fan of any of the Mannings for that matter, I really find myself not caring too much when I read that Peyton Manning will be officially released by the Colts on Wednesday morning.  The team will not pick up his $28 million bonus, electing to let the 4-time NFL MVP sign with another team.

I don’t think this comes as a huge surprise to many.  Actually, one could see it written in the stars only a few months into the 2011-12 season when we knew that Indy would finish last, and considering a certain college pivot who is entering the draft this summer – yeah, that guy!

Cooper Manning (yeah, I said the same thing – who?), Peyton’s eldest brother, confirmed with USA Today’s Jim Corbett that ESPN’s report that Manning would be released by Indianapolis on Wednesday.

Such is the nature of professional sports.  Manning, while aging in football standards, is still more than serviceable, and has plenty of gas in the tank.  So, who will pick up the first-ballot Hall of Famer?  Miami, Arizona, New York (Jets) or Seattle?  Someone else?

Feel free to chime in below.

Sidney Crosby takes first full contact practice since December

Sidney Crosby’s concussion-like symptoms have finally subsided and his return to NHL action is getting closer.  Crosby’s doctors have cleared him for contact and Sid the Kid has once again begun full practices with the Penguins.  While it remains unclear exactly when he’ll be ready for game action again no one expects it to take 6 weeks like when he was first cleared for contact in October 2011.  Sid says there is no chance he plays this week however.

Obviously Sid’s return would be huge for the Penguins and they’d be adding the best player in hockey just in time for the playoffs.

We’ll keep you updated as more news breaks.
