In somewhat of a shocker, the lads from Canada defeated their American counterparts 2-nil in Nashville, TN, in the Olympic qualifying tournament match Saturday night.
The CONCACAF region, which includes North and Central American teams, has only two spots reserved for the Olympic tournament. Canada has not been represented at the tournament since 1984.
After a strong opening by the American side, including what looked like the first tally in the 48′ only to be called offside, the Canadians took control for the start of the second half. Doneil Henry connected in the 57′ off a corner, heading the ball to the back of the net past the American keeper. 1-nil Canada. Only seven minutes later, Canada doubled their lead with Lucas Cavallini making good with a second Canadian goal off a header. 2-nil Canada.
The Americans did muster a strong counter later in the second half, but the score remained after 90 minutes. The Americans’ road to the Olympics hit a speed bump, but don’t expect them to lay down either. Canada, with a win against Cuba (who has not had a good showing yet), and then against the second ranked team in the qualifying tourney, would earn their spot to the Olympics.
Well done, eh?
…and that is the last word.
