Behind the Game Ops for the 10th United Bowl

Behind the Game Ops

To some, it may come off as just any other indoor football game: one that just happens to be played with a trophy presented to the winning team after the game.

Although, for the Iowa Barnstormers game operations crew, it’s actually a big opportunity.

The crew, which controls everything the fans see during the game that isn’t the actual gameplay, sees Saturday night’s game as a chance to rope in a new audience.

“We get to share our product with a fan base that has never seen it before,” director of game operations Logan Angelo said. “We want to turn one time fans into lifetime fans [on Saturday].”

Angelo heads the operation along with Juli Pettit, who also handles the team’s media relations.

“Me and Logan work pretty closely together in figuring out the game script and whats going to happen and when it’s going to happen,” Pettit said” “We take all of the things we have together, and figure out the best way to schedule those.”

The events include different mini-games during timeouts, promotions on the big screens, and other things that happen away from the action.

“During the game while he’s in the production booth, I’m on the floor,” Pettit said. “The interns have done a great job in keeping up with it, paying attention, and learning what’s going on.”

Though this Saturday’s game will be a bit more amped up for all parties.

With is being the championship game, Angelo is tasked with putting on the best game ops performance that the arena has seen.

“The goal is that every single sponsor is in the building, you want all of them here and more potential clients with this big of a game,” Angelo said. “The logical side is everything’s got to be executed perfectly so that they feel good about the money they spent with us.”

Angelo put together a new entrance video for not only the Barnstormers, but also the Storm.

“You’re in the championship game even though your not in your building,” Angelo said. “We’ll give them a moment of shine to say congratulations on making the championship.”

Both teams will have their respective entrances and it ideally will set up a juggernaut atmosphere.

“We’re going to have our best crowd this year,” Pettit said. “We really want to have the fans to have fun. We want everyone to keep the high energy up. Make sure it doesn’t fall at any point.”

Iowa is looking to have its best performance both on and off the field.

“We want an experience at the game that’s so good that they come back. They want to do season tickets next year or at least come to more games.”

If that happens, and the Barnstormers win, it could be a monumental night.

“If we win we will have a party in here,” Angelo said at Wells Fargo Arena.

As far as what that entails, is a mystery for now.

“I guess you’ll just have to wait and see,” Angelo said.
