A second Iowa Barnstormer is knocking on the door of football stardom as Drew Powell has become the latest to sign a deal to the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Powell sat out during Iowa’s 41-25 win over the Nebraska Saturday night while former Cyclone Grant Rohach took over the reigns.
Drew Powell signs with CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders
Powell was gearing up for his upcoming stint with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, where he has signed a mini-camp deal.
“Getting the opportunity to get a pay raise is what its all about coming to the IFL,” head coach Dixie Wooten said. “Its huge. You want to show what we’re doing here, is the right way. When scouts see these guys on film and think they are doing a great job, that speaks volumes for our coaching staff.”
Powell joins Isame Faciane as the two players who have moved up from Dixie Wooten and company’s squad this season.
“I knew I wasn’t going to have him the whole season, because of the talent that he had,” Wooten said. “I’m thankful for him going up and I’m trying to get more guys up as well.”
Powell started the Barnstormers first five games of the season, throwing a league best 62.6% with 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions, leading the team to a 3-2 record.
Powell could potentially make his CFL debut with the Roughriders on May 27, as the team opens its pre-season slate of games. That would be against the Edmonton Eskimos and would kick off at 4:00 p.m. For more updates on Drew Powell, follow Connor Ferguson (@cfchangs9) and Last Word On Sports’ Indoor department at @LWOS_IndoorFB.
