Iowa Barnstormers start season Sunday in Green Bay

Indoor football season has returned, which means the Iowa Barnstormers are back following a trip to the United Conference championship game in 2017.

The Barnstormers will travel to Green Bay on Sunday to take on the Blizzard in their first game of the 2018 campaign.

“We want to go out there, compete, and start fast,” Wooten said. “We want to make sure our guys understand what they have to do to go out there and be successful.”

Starting fast was something that last season’s team did well, and it helped them land a spot in the semi-finals.

Iowa finished 2017 with a 13-3 regular season record that included four victories against the Blizzard.

“They’re going to come out real strong, [considering the sweep],” head coach Dixie Wooten said.

Iowa comes into the year with two big name quarterbacks in Drew Powell and Grant Rohach, although only one will play on Sunday.

Neither of them are injured, but Wooten said he doesn’t believe in the dual quarterback system because it doesn’t allow a quarterback to get into a rhythm.

That being said, Powell will be getting the start Sunday.

Him and the rest of the offense will take on a Blizzard defense that owns all-IFL DB Manny Asprilla as its cornerstone.

Aside from his comments of Asprilla, Wooten didn’t mince his words of what he though about this Sunday’s game.

“Asprilla is one of those guys that we saw and played great last year,” Wooten said. “I know he’s going to come in and play a great, great defensive game this year. “He’s the only one I’d consider being real tough on us,” Wooten said.

Iowa and Green Bay will kick off at 3:05 p.m. from the Resch Center on Sunday, and the game can be streamed live on YouTube.
