Barnstormers sign first player

It’s now September, which means the 2018-season Indoor Football signings will soon be in full swing.

This afternoon, the Iowa Barnstormers announced their first signing for next season in former Sam Houston State (SHSU) running back Donovan Williams.

Williams, a 6-0, 215 lb. back became the 10th player in SHSU history to run for over 200 yards in a game, two seasons ago in 2015.

“Donavan is one of the most explosive running backs and a great blocker,” Barnstormers Coach Dixie Wooten said in a press release. “I look forward to having an older and more improved Donavan in our backfield this season.”

Williams spent a brief stint with the Barnstormers during the 2017 season, but didn’t complete the season with the team.

Now he will begin to compete for a roster spot on Coach Wooten’s squad.

Wooten lead the team to their most successful season since they rebirthed in 2008, finishing off the year with a 13-3 record in the regular season. Iowa was ultimately downed by the Sioux Falls Storm in the United Conference championship game.

The season included an 11-game winning streak following a 2-2 start to the year, not to mention a 7-1 record at their home Wells Fargo Arena.

The Barnstormers look to continue the success in the Indoor Football League (IFL) next season who lost a variety of teams including powerhouses Wichita Falls and Sioux Falls to another league.

The IFL now sits with five teams prepared to play in the 2018 season, but the league is rumored to be looking for teams to fill in the gaps of what would be a long year of hanging on.

Two rumored expansion locations include Tuscon, AZ and Boise, ID; though neither have committed to the 2018 schedule.
