Devontae Booker Will Steal the Spotlight

When the Denver Broncos begin their playoff push, Devontae Booker will steal the spotlight. Don't be surprised when it happens.

Entering training camp the Denver Broncos top two running backs included C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman. It made sense being that both backs were instrumental in helping the team to a Super Bowl championship last year. Since camp started, there has been a different look in the backfield. A fourth-round selection from Utah is impressing both players and coaches alike. So don’t be surprised when it happens, because Devontae Booker will steal the spotlight.

Devontae Booker Will Steal the Spotlight

While at Utah, Booker was an All-American candidate who had first-round draft choice written all over him. He was on a very talented team that looked to make a run at the College Football Playoffs. He was having a fabulous season, amassing over 1,200 yards in his first ten games, until a torn knee ligament ended the senior running back’s year.

That injury led many NFL teams to second guess and even decide against drafting him. Once a possible first rounder, Booker slid all the way to the fourth round, where the Broncos eventually grabbed him. Some saw it as a gamble, but based on his quick recovery and motivation to succeed, he may end up being the steal of the draft.

Since putting on the pads and studying the playbook, he has continued to make positive strides. He is a perfect fit for a Gary Kubiak led offense with his decisive cuts and soft hands. Booker has worked his way up the depth chart and actually gotten in some reps with the first team guys. This is not a surprise though, as he did say he wasn’t in Denver to carry pads, but to earn a spot. Earning that spot he is. Booker has begun to overtake the veteran Hillman and will continue to push Anderson.

Booker Continues to Improve

Taking advantage of the opportunities provided to him, Booker is showcasing all of his skills. He has very soft hands, making him a constant threat out of the backfield. Combine that with his hard running style and his sharp cuts and he has the ability to be the next great Broncos running back.

He led all Broncos running backs in their second preseason game, rushing for 36 yards on nine carries. At this rate, he will be sharing duties with Anderson. Eventually, he will steal the spotlight. When this happens, Broncos fans are going to be in for a treat. He will have them reminiscing about the days when Terrell Davis was wearing the orange and blue.

The future is bright for this rookie and as long as he stays healthy, he is going to be an All-Pro in the near future. For now, the Broncos will feature a great combination of running backs. Anderson and Booker are going to cause fits for opposing defenses, which should make the Broncos running attacks one of the best in the NFL. When the playoff push begins, it will be Booker who steals the spotlight.
