Antonio Cromartie Works Out for Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts have struggled mightily with injuries in the secondary since the start of the preseason. The Colts are currently facing injuries with D’Joun Smith, Jalil Brown, Darius Butler, Patrick Robinson, and most importantly Vontae Davis. According to Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star, former New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie worked out for the Colts.

Cromartie had a tough season when he returned to the Jets from his stint with the Arizona Cardinals in 2015. He had a career low zero interceptions in 15 games. However, the Colts are in desperate need of help fast at the cornerback position. With five of their corners facing some type of injury Cromartie would provide some much needed depth. They are currently left with six cornerbacks on the roster that are not injured. Four of those six players are rookies. Tay Glover-Wright and Tevin Mitchel are the only two players that are not injured and not rookies. However, with almost three weeks left until the first regular season game there is still time to recover. According to ESPN, Davis is currently facing a high ankle sprain and is out week-to-week.

Furthermore, the Colts first game comes against the Detroit Lions, who have the capability of passing the ball well. Butler and Robinson are currently working their way back from leg injuries and should be ready to go by the season opener. Colts head coach Chuck Pagano described their cornerback situation right now as “scary”. And adding Cromartie would at least give the Colts a much needed veteran presence. The secondary currently features one other rookie at free safety with former Clemson Tiger T.J. Green. Therefore, the next preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles on August 27th at 7 p.m. will be very telling about their current injury status.
