Steve Wheatcroft gets back in Contention with Low Round of the Weekend

Oakville, ON – Steve Wheatcroft finished up by draining a 42 foot eagle putt on the 18th hole to put a 64 on the board at the third round of the RBC Canadian Open.  The round puts him at seven-under for the tournament and in a tie for third place (currently). However, there are a number of golfers still on the course.  The 64 was the lowest round shot at the tournament so far this year.

“It’s always nice to finish with an eagle. That’s twice I’ve done that this week. I’m obviously thrilled,” Wheatcroft said. “I hit just a perfect seven-iron in there, that’s the exact shot I was trying to hit. I’ve had that putt before and I remembered that it snaps back at the end. I played a little extra break, and I’m glad it was the right amount.”

Wheatcroft indicated that his round was as a result of perseverance. When asked about any particular adjustments between yesterday’s round of 77, and today’s round of 64, Wheatcroft remarked, “Golf is a goofy game. I shot four-under on the first day in really tough conditions, felt like about eight-under. Yesterday, I had good conditions and shot five-over par. If I missed a shot even a little bit yesterday, it ended up in a really bad spot. I kept hitting the edges with putts, and things just didn’t go my way. I just kept doing the same thing. I’ve been hitting the ball really well lately, and swinging the club great. Today, I just went out there and tried to do my best.”

The conditions at Glen Abbey, very firm and fast, have become a major topic of conversation this week. Wheatcroft indicated that things continue to be difficult and getting out with a morning tee time was a key to the round.

“Its just as firm and as fast as it was. Obviously, we’ve played in the morning, so it will be a little softer. Its going to keep drying out, and it will be baked out this afternoon. They have done a good job of keeping it right on the edge of what’s fair and what’s not fair.”

“For some of the last groups of the day, it is going to be really tough. It will be tough to get at certain pins. The pins you could get at this morning, you won’t be able to get at this afternoon. Those guys are great players though, and I’m sure they will find a way to do it.”
