Julian Green Trains With Bayern Munich First Team

Today, 2014 United States Men National Team World Cup goalscorer Julian Green trained with the Bayern Munich first team. Julian Green is famous for scoring against Belgium in the 2014 World Cup. This past season, he only played one match with the first team. In that match, Green appeared for 62 forgettable minutes against Dinamo Zagreb.

Even though he is training with the first team, many Bayern first team players have not yet returned from international break. Currently, Kingsley Coman and Joshua Kimmich are two players ahead of Green in the pecking order at Bayern who are on international break. Also, Mario Gotze, Franck Ribery, and Arjen Robben are three players who weren’t on international break, but are still ahead of Green. Finally, Renato Sanches, Portugal’s Euro 2016 hero, is newly signed by Bayern and definitely more highly-rated by the coaches than Green. Once they return, he will probably be sent back to the reserves.

However, Green had a good season with Bayern Munich II this year, notching ten goals and four assists in 28 games. Clearly, he didn’t do enough to attract the attention of the first team coaching staff.

Julian Green 2016 USMNT Career So Far

Though Green did appear several times for the US Under-23 team, he has struggled to get appearances for the USMNT. He appeared only once this year in the friendly against Puerto Rico.

Possible Loan Destinations

Now a 21-year- old, Green needs to be playing regularly against high-quality opposition. The best option for him would be a move to the Dutch Eredivisie, the German second league, the English Championship or Major League Soccer. If selling isn’t an option, a loan to another club in those leagues could be helpful to his career.

In the past, loans have not worked out very well for him. His loan to Hamburger SV was a disaster and really stopped his growth, so Bayern must make sure that if he is loaned out, it is to a team with whom he can get playing time and succeed.

One place where he could succeed is with Fulham in the Championship, who are currently in need of another winger. Another possible place for a loan is in the Dutch Eredivise, where Americans have typically succeeded in the past.

Finally, he could go to MLS, but he would have to go through the allocation ranking. As of now, the top team in the rankings is Chicago Fire, who could use some help out wide. Right now, their best attacker is David Accam, who could definitely use some support. Accam is very pacy, and his pace would match well with Green’s pace and technical ability.

Even though he is training with the first team, the best move for him is to get out of Bayern Munich as quickly as possible. It is important to remember that much of the Bayern first team competed in Euro 2016 and is not with the club right now. When they return, Green will find his opportunities severely limited, much as they were last season.
