Columbus Blue Jackets Buy Out Fedor Tyutin

The Columbus Blue Jackets have bought out the contract of veteran blueliner, Fedor Tyutin. There have been rumblings for some time on whether or not the Blue Jackets would move forward with possible buy-outs, but this will come as no surprise to anyone who has been following the organization over the last year.

Columbus Blue Jackets Buy Out Fedor Tyutin

With the Blue Jackets opting to buy out the last two seasons of his contract, it will not only free up some much needed cap space in Columbus, but will open up a coveted roster spot for some younger, fresher faces to come in. There is a strong possibility that someone like Zach Werenski could find himself playing NHL hockey next season on a fairly regular, if not permanent, basis.

Buying out the contract of Tyutin, which was going to see him get paid $4.75 million in salary in the upcoming season and $4 million in the 2017-18 season is a very smart piece of business for the Blue Jackets. Although it will cost Columbus approximately $1.45 million dollars per year, and cap hits of $1.2 million next year and $1.96 million the following year, they will save a total of nearly $5.8 million in cap space over those years, freeing up space to give bigger contracts to bigger names in the organization. To put these numbers into perspective for the upcoming season, the Blue Jackets cap hit before the buy-out is right above $69 million right now and will be at $65.78 million after the buy-out.

Tyutin leaving means the Blue Jackets now have seven defenseman listed on the roster on the official team website, but it is unlikely that two of them, Cody Goloubef and Justin Falk, will spend much of their seasons in Columbus. Tyutin spent the last eight seasons playing for the Blue Jackets after coming in from the New York Rangers in 2008-09. During his time with the Blue Jackets he played in 553 games for the organization, making him second only to Rick Nash. During this time he also accumulated 185 total points for the organization, putting him in fifth place in Blue Jackets history. Along with those, he is also third all-time in assists for Columbus (146), eight in penalty minutes (351), and sixth in shots (792).
