Prior to Saturday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, the New York Yankees have gone ahead and placed veteran first baseman, Mark Teixeira, on the 15-Day disabled list with what the team doctors are calling an articular cartilage tear in his right knee, and have picked up the contract of infielder Chris Parmelee from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Teixeira, 36, was forced to leave Friday’s game against the Orioles in the third inning and was taken straight to the hospital for an MRI, which revealed the injury.

It’s something he’s dealt with before,” manager Joe Girardi told reporters after Friday’s 6-5 loss. “For whatever reason, it started locking up tonight.”

The Yankees also transferred Dustin Ackley over to the 60-day disabled list after undergoing successful surgery to repair his torn labrum.

Ever since Teixeira put on the Pinstripes, its been one injury after another, year in and year out. And now Teixeira is in the final year of his eight year deal, worth $180 million. The last several seasons have seen his production go down drastically, in part because of his health. Through 48 games this season, Teixeira has slashed .180/.271/.263 for the Yankees with just three home runs, five doubles, 16 runs and only 12 RBI’s.

Parmelee, 28, who the Yankees brought up, has slashed .252/.343/.444 in 43 games with the Triple-A RailRiders, but he does have 305 games of MLB experience with the Minnesota Twins  and Baltimore Orioles.

In parts of five MLB seasons, Parmelee played four with the Twins and only one with the Orioles, and he owns a career batting average of .245 with 28 homers and 94 RBI’s. Minnesota selected Parmelee with the 20th overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft, and he made his major league debut six years later on September 6, 2011.

Teixeira is in his sixteenth season as a major league ball player. He’s spent the past eight years with the New York Yankees. Prior to New York, he spent five years with the Texas Rangers, two years with the Atlanta Braves, and a year with the Los Angeles Angels. For his career, Teixeira has a career batting average of .270, with 397 home runs, and 1,266 RBIs, along with 1,813 career hits.
