Rangers Send Choo and Stubbs to DL

The Texas Rangers sent Shin-Soo Choo and Drew Stubbs to the DL yesterday ahead of their series against the Los Angeles Angels. Both players were injured in the Rangers series sweep of the Houston Astros. Choo was injured on Friday, and Stubbs on Sunday. To fill the positions left by the two players the Rangers called up outfielders Jared Hoying and Joey Gallo from Triple-A Round Rock Express.

Choo was back in the lineup on Friday for the first time in 40 days. He has missed the time due to a strained right calf that he injured on April 9 at the beginning of the season. Choo was slotted in the lead off spot, and was able to draw to walks before he strained his hamstring running the bases forcing him to leave the game.

Choo and Stubbs to the DL

According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.Com, Choo’s MRI showed the strain to be worse than it was anticipated. Sullivan quoted Choo saying, “I’m mad at myself. Come back from the disabled list and this happens. Nobody wants to get hurt. It’s frustrating.”

Drew Stubbs hit the DL with a sprained toe. Stubbs was a late addition yesterday as it was rumored that he wouldn’t be going to the DL at all, and was a game time decision. He hurt the toe in the last game of the Astros series.

In correlation to the moves  the Rangers called up Jared Hoying, and Joey Gallo. Hoying, a career minor league player to this point, was hitting an impressive .319 to go with a .409 on base percentage. Hoying also had seven home runs and 32 RBIs at Triple A Round Rock. Hoying’s stats a month and a half into the season made Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels decision to call him up a rather easy one.

Many fans remember Joey Gallo from last year as he splashed on the scene crushing home runs in his first few games on the big league roster. He quickly cooled off however, and was sent back to the minors. This time he will look to make a more lasting impression, hoping make it a difficult decision for Daniels to send him back down when Choo and Stubbs return in the future.

The Rangers could possibly make one more roster move in the coming days. Daniels told The Ben and Skin Show on 105.3 The Fan that if Rougned Odor’s suspension was upheld to the full eight games, Jurickson Profar was a possibility to replace Odor on the big league roster until the suspension was complete. The appeal hearing was scheduled for today, but the Rangers organization has announced that no decision will be made today per Fort Worth Star Telegram writer Jeff Wilson. Currently Odor is in the lineup scheduled to lead off for Tuesday’s game with the Angels.

Other Notes.

  • Yu Darvish will make his season debut on Saturday, pitching against the Pirates.
  • According to Jon Daniels, A.J. Wilson is still weeks away from returning, and the team will still be on a 5 man rotation with Darvish returns.
  • The Rangers have announced that former all-star catcher Ivan Rodriguez will represent the Texas Rangers at the MLB Draft on June 9.
  • Prince Fielder is currently in the midst of a six-game hitting streak, and Elvis Andrus also has a nine-game hitting streak going.
