Blackhawks acquire Sekac

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have acquired forward Jiri Sekac (SEH-katch) from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Ryan Garbutt.

Sekac, 23, has posted three points (1G, 2A) in 22 games with Anaheim this season, his second in the National Hockey League. The Kladno, Czech Republic, native also appeared in the 2015 NHL All-Star Skills Competition. He split the 2014-15 campaign with the Ducks and Montreal Canadiens, collecting 14 assists, 23 points and 22 penalty minutes in 69 regular-season contests; he also appeared in seven 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs games with Anaheim. Originally signed as a free agent by Montreal on July 1, 2014, he was traded to Anaheim on Feb. 24, 2015. He previously tallied 39 points (13G, 26A) in 109 regular-season games with the Kontinental Hockey League’s Lev Praha (2011-14), in addition to eight points (1G, 7A) in 24 postseason tilts.

Garbutt, 30, has collected six points (2G, 4A) and 94 hits in 43 games with Chicago this season, after being acquired from Dallas on July 10, 2015. The Winnipeg native has notched 76 points (32G, 44A) over 241 career games with Chicago and Dallas (2011-15).

Ducks Acquire LW Garbutt from Chicago in Exchange for Sekac

The Ducks have acquired left wing Ryan Garbutt from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for left wing Jiri Sekac.

Garbutt, 30 (8/12/85), has scored 32-44=76 points with 242 penalty minutes (PIM) in 241 career NHL games with Dallas and Chicago. In 2013-14, Garbutt collected a career-high 17 goals and 32 points (17-15=32) along with a +10 rating in 75 games with the Stars. The 6-0, 195-pound winger went on to score three goals against Anaheim in the First Round of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Garbutt recorded 2-4=6 points with 27 PIM in 43 games with Chicago this season. He was acquired from Dallas with Trevor Daley in exchange for Patrick Sharp and Stephen Johns on July 10, 2015. Garbutt originally signed as a free agent with Dallas on July 1, 2011 after leading the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League (AHL) with a +27 rating in 2010-11. A 2009 graduate of Brown University, Garbutt was named to the All-Academic Team twice in his four seasons in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Sekac, 23 (6/10/92), collected 1-2=3 points with an even plus/minus rating and four PIM in 22 games with the Ducks this season. Acquired from Montreal in exchange for Devante Smith-Pelly on Feb. 24, 2015, Sekac has posted 10-16=26 points with 26 PIM in 91 career NHL games with the Ducks and Canadiens. The 6-1, 185-pound winger made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut in 2015, going scoreless with two PIM in seven games with Anaheim.
