OTPP: Kopitar's Deal, Ovechkin's 500th, and More

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Powerplay with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

On this week’s edition:

Reports have emerged that Los Angeles Kings centre Anze Kopitar is nearing an eight-year, $80 million contract extension with the team.  Dave and Ben talk about the proposed deal, Kopitar’s place in the league, what the move means for the Kings moving forward and what it means in relation to other NHL stars looking for new deals (see Steven Stamkos).

Speaking of Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lightning, there are also reports that a Jonathan Drouin deal is imminent. The boys look at those reports and on what the possible return could be for the St. Louis Blues.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward James Van Riemsdyk has a broken foot. How does this effect the Leafs plans?  Is tank nation now in full effect, and who will they deal at the NHL trade deadline?

Alex Ovechkin has scored his 500th career goal.  Where does this put him in the pantheon of goal scorers?  How does he compare to the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy, Brett Hull, and others?

Lastly Ben and Dave examine the NHL awards.  Who are their mid-season picks for the Hart, Calder, Vezina, Norris, Selke, Jack Adams, and GM of the Year?

All this and more, on this weeks episode of On the Powerplay.
