MLS POWER RANKINGS 24 AUGUST 2015

RANK TEAM COMMENTS Last 6 Previous Change
1

LA Galaxy

LA’s domination of the blue team was another great example of the importance of building a complete team. They have a lot to prove still, especially on the road, but they have the personnel to do it. 5-1-0 1 0
2

New York Red Bulls

Red Bulls had the weekend off before their midweek game at Chicago. Their record over their last 6 is still the league’s best. Strength of schedule and other teams competing in CCL may have the Red Bulls winning the shield. 5-0-1 3 +1
3

Vancouver Whitecaps FC

The Whitecaps have been one of the strongest teams in MLS this year, but they have struggled against so-called top teams in the West. Their win against Dallas was a statement. 4-1-1 5 +2
4

Sporting Kansas City

SKC has lost two straight. Don’t read too much into it yet, but with a ton of road games remaining against Western opposition, things might be getting rough. 2-3-1 2 -2
5

FC Dallas

Dallas has now lost three in a row. The good news? Two of those losses are against the best teams in the Western Conference. The other was against Chicago. 3-3-0 4 -1
6

Columbus Crew SC

Columbus probably regrets not winning at home against NYCFC, but their dramatic late win against SKC was a big boost. 3-1-2 8 +2
7

DC United

DC, like Dallas, is at the beginning of their own slide. With CCL games to play in a short span, they may be dropping out of the lead in the East. Some big games loom for them for the next couple of weeks. 3-3-0 11 +4
8

San Jose Earthquakes

San Jose just beat two very strong teams on the road. They are trending now to take the final playoff spot from a certain green team. No surprise here that a Domonic Kinnear led team is getting hot heading into September. 3-2-1 20 +12
9

Toronto FC

Toronto destroyed Orlando, but that should be expected. While things have been up and down for the Reds this year, they are still in excellent shape to make the playoffs. It will all come down to keeping their offense firing and reducing defensive issues. 2-3-1 14 +5
10

New England Revolution

New England is now unbeaten in 4, even if it is against somewhat weaker teams and at home. That is still good for a team that looked hopeless in the early to mid summer. 3-2-1 9 -1
11

Portland Timbers

Portland’s dramatic late equalizer may have felt like a victory, but beating a team that is lower in the standings at home should be the norm. New boy Melano got himself on the board finally, and that should offer a nice confidence boost moving forward. 2-1-3 6 -5
12

Colorado Rapids

Rapids winning on the road is a rare treat for the struggling Western side. Now if some of their younger players could get some minutes, the season won’t be for naught. 3-3-0 12 0
13

Real Salt Lake

Salt Lake got a big win this weekend and now sit just 3 points out of playoff position. Tough couple of weeks ahead with CCL and Dallas, Houston, and LA on the schedule. 3-3-0 15 +2
14

Houston Dynamo

Houston was up 2-goals on a team that was having scoring trouble.  On the road, you need to be able to lock down games when you lead. Coughing up late is even worse. Owen Coyle and co. hold their fate in their hands. 2-2-2 7 -7
15

Montreal Impact

Drogba’s debut probably didn’t go as planned. He had a couple of chances, but failed to make much of an Impact. I hate myself for that pun. 2-3-1 10 -5
16

New York City FC

City was completely outclassed against LA. Midweek game didn’t help, but few saw them hanging in against the Galaxy. Still in the playoff hunt, but it is an uphill battle. 2-3-1 13 -3
17

Chicago Fire

The next four teams on the list are nearly interchangeable. The Fire get the bump since their only win in the last 6 came against a strong opponent in Dallas. RB comes to town now, and the Fire will be hard pressed to keep them from winning their first game at Toyota Park. 1-3-2 16 -1
18

Philadelphia Union

The win on the road against Montreal was just their second of the season. It might well be too little too late for the Union however. 1-3-2 17 -1
19

Orlando City SC

Orlando has been a complete mess defensively. Kaka’s magic will not be enough to save them. Hard to see either expansion team making the playoffs at this point, but I would call Orlando a better bet to miss them. 1-4-1 19 0
20

Seattle Sounders FC

Seattle’s win against Orlando seemed to put their season back on track. The loss to RSL will resonate. The offense was back to sputtering and their now trending to miss the playoffs. 1-5-0 18 -2
