OTPP: NHL Off-season Extravaganza

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Powerplay with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

They’re BACK!  After a brief hiatus due to the Pan Am Games, and a broken computer (not related), Ben and Dave are back with another edition of On The Powerplay.

While some might think that the off-season has been slow over these past three weeks, the boys still had plenty to talk about.

They try to make sense of the Brandon Sutter for Nick Bonino and prospects pick, looking at the move from both a Pittsburgh and a Vancouver perspective.  They also look at Sutter’s new contract.  Does this move make any sense from a Vancouver perspective?  How dangerous will the Penguins offence be?  How did the signing of Eric Fehr make this possible.

They then evaluate the new contracts around the NHL, which ones make sense, and which ones don’t.  Derek Stepan? Jake Voracek? Braden Holtby? Alex Semin? Sean Couturier? Jonathan Bernier?  Who is overpaying or underpaying for the talent they have gotten locked up.

They also get into Cody Franson watch and try to figure out why a defenceman who was one of the best free agents on the market, is still on the market in August?  What is Franson looking for, and when will he get it?

The Boys then get into the business of the game.  They look at the Expansion Process and what Phase Two means for Quebec City and Las Vegas.  They also look at the 2022 Winter Olympics being awarded to Beijing, and what that means for NHL participation in future games.  Lastly the boys look at the new rights deal between the NHL and MLB Advanced media, and what that could mean for the league, for the salary cap, and for those of us who consume hockey via the internet.

All that in this week’s edition of On the Powerplay.
