Mets acquire outfielder Yoenis Cespedes from Detroit Tigers

The following press release comes from the New York Mets of Major League Baseball concerning their transaction with the Detroit Tigers just hours before baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline today.  The Mets get the big outfield bat that they had been looking for as they make a push to be a playoff team.

The New York Mets today announced that the club has acquired outfielder Yoenis Cespedes from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for minor league righthanded pitchers Luis Cessa and Michael Fulmer.

Detroit Tigers Acquire Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa from New York Mets in exchange for Yoenis Cespedes

DETROIT- The Detroit Tigers announced today that the club has acquired righthanded pitchers Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa from the New York Mets in exchange for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Fulmer, 22, has spent most of the 2015 season with Double A Binghamton, making 15 starts and compiling a 6-2 record with a 1.88 ERA (86.0IP/18ER) and 83 strikeouts. Fulmer has held opponents to a .227 batting average while with Binghamton. Fulmer also made one start this season with Single A St. Lucie and had a 0-0 record with a 3.86 ERA (7.0IP/3ER) and nine strikeouts. Over his minor league career, Fulmer has a 22-23 record with a 3.20 ERA (351.1IP/125ER) and 332 strikeouts in 70 appearances, including 69 starts. The 6-3, 200 lbs. righthander is ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Mets organization, according to MLB.com. A native of Edmond, Oklahoma, Fulmer was selected by the Mets in the compensation A round of the 2011 MLB Draft.

Cessa, 23, has split the 2015 season between Double A Binghamton and Triple A Las Vegas. In 18 starts between Double A and Triple A, Cessa has a 7-7 record with a 3.98 ERA (101.2IP/45ER) and 85 strikeouts. In 88 career appearances as a minor leaguer, including 79 starts, Cessa has a 31-27 record with a 3.50 ERA (476.0IP/185ER) and 385 strikeouts. The 6-3, 190 lbs. righthanded pitcher is ranked as the No. 16 prospect in the Mets organization, according to MLB.com. A native of Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico, Cessa was signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent on July 9, 2008.

Cespedes has posted a .293 (118×403) batting average with 62 runs scored, 28 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs and 61 RBI in 102 games this season.
