On The Powerplay – Playoffs, Coaches, Memorial Cup, and World Championships

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Powerplay with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

Dave and Ben are back with an absolutely jam-packed edition of On the Powerplay.

The boys start by looking at the early returns from the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the conference finals.  With three games in each series played, and all four teams getting a win, what has stood out?  How will the triple overtime game two between the Ducks and Blackhawks effect the series going forward?  Why has Tyler Johnson been such a stud in the playoffs for the Lightning, and what must the New York Rangers do if they want to stop him?  Where are these series headed?

Next up is a look at Mike Babcock signing with the Leafs.  Why did he choose Toronto over Buffalo?  Why is Ben so mad at Sabres general manager Tim Murray? How will the signing of Babcock effect the Leafs going forward?  Whats next in Toronto and how much say does Babcock have in personnel decisions in Toronto.  The boys also look at Todd McLellan’s hire in Edmonton, and Don Sweeney being the new general manager of the Boston Bruins.

In our third segment of the night the Boys are pleased to be joined by Neate Sager (@NeateBuzztheNet) of Yahoo Sports.  Neate covers Junior hockey for Yahoo, and is one of the most knowledgeable writers in the world of Canadian Junior Hockey.  The Boys discuss the upcoming Memorial Cup which starts this Friday in Quebec City.  Neate and Ben run down the teams, what players to watch for, give their tournament predictions, and much more.  You can of course find all of Nate’s work at YahooSports here, and the full Buzzing the Net Junior Hockey team here.

Lastly the boys finish up by talking the World Championships.  Dave tells why he is so impressed by the work of Todd Richards in coaching the American Team and bringing home the Bronze from Prague.  The Boys discuss Jaromir Jagr winning tournament MVP.  They also discuss the dominance of the gold medal winning squad from Team Canada. Lastly they look at the fallout from Russia’s actions at the end of the tournament and discuss KHL players who could cross the pond after the tournament, including the best player to never play in the NHL, Sergei Mozyakin.
