On The Powerplay – Draft Lottery, Stoll Arrested, Playoffs and KHL Champs

Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Powerplay with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.

This week Dave and Ben dive into the NHL Draft Lottery. While 29 other teams groaned as the Edmonton Oilers won the right to the first overall pick and the phenom of Connor McDavid, Ben explains what other move the Oilers made this week which helps to ensure this franchise finally turns the corner.

Dave and Ben then look at the Arizona Coyotes, arguably the lottery’s biggest loser and what it means that they are now third overall. Do they take Dylan Strome? Mitch Marner? Noah Hanifin? Where do the Coyotes go after missing out on the big two of McDavid and Jack Eichel.

Next the action turns to Las Vegas. Jarrett Stoll was arrested for having cocaine, ecstasy and MDMA on him at a pool resort, and he seems to be taking the fall here, but reports are now surfacing that multiple other kings players were with him in Las Vegas. Is this a black mark for the NHL? Does the league have to take a second to reconsider a franchise in Sin City?

Back on the ice, Ben rants about why Michel Therrien just gets NO RISPEK and why his performances behind the bench of the Canadiens deserve far more praise in the Montreal Media and amongst the Habs fan base than what he gets.

Dave looks at the Anaheim Ducks and how they are handling the Winnipeg Jets, as well as the Tampa Bay Lightning and their sudden lack of goal scoring. While Ben looks at Sam Bennett and the impact he’s having in Calgary.

For the final segment of the show the boys are joined by Latvian correspondent Aivis Kalnins, who looks at the 2015 KHL Playoffs and the Gagarin Cup Champions SKA St. Petersburg. He looks at what Ilya Kovalchuk means to the team, and why they are about more than just one player.

Aivis also discussess issues of competitive balance in the KHL. The drop of the Russian Ruble and what it means for teams folding and players leaving for North America. He also looks at Steve Moses who recently broke KHL goal scoring records before signing with the Nashville Predators.

Its a jam packed hour and a bit, and you’ll find the answers to all these questions and more, as we go on the powerplay.
