Johnny Boychuk re-signs with Islanders, 7 years, $42 million

Johnny Boychuk has made the New York Islanders his permanent home.

The New York Islanders just inked the defenceman to a seven year, $42 million contract containing a $6 million cap hit. No other details have yet to be disclosed.

Boychuk, 31, was acquired by the Islanders from the Boston Bruins for a second round pick in 2015 and a conditional third round pick in 2016. He has 32 points in 59 games with 7 goals and 25 assists. He also boasts an impressive +17 rating and has been credited as a major piece to the turnabout of the Islanders franchise this season, along with fellow defenceman Nick Leddy who was re-signed in February. Boychuk has been eating the biggest minutes on the Islanders blueline.

Boychuk was originally drafted 61st overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2002 but was traded to the Boston Bruins for Matt Hendricks. His current season with the Islanders has already surpassed his career best numbers.
