Sam Bradford Traded to Eagles for Nick Foles

Two quarterbacks who dealt with injuries in 2014 will reportedly be swapping teams.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles will trade Nick Foles to the St. Louis Rams for Sam Bradford. In addition, the Rams will get Philadelphia’s fourth round pick in 2015 and second round pick in 2016 in exchange for the Rams fifth rounder in 2015. In the event Bradford is not named the starter this season, that second round selection returns to the Eagles.

Foles had a breakout 2013 season after getting the starting job in Week 6 after Michael Vick injured his hamstring the week before. In 13 appearances that included ten starts, he would finish with 2,891 yards, 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions. His touchdown to interception ratio was the best in NFL history. The Eagles would advance to the NFL Wild Card round before losing a close game to the New Orleans Saints.

Things came back down to earth a bit for Foles last season. He would throw for 2,163 yards, 13 touchdowns and ten interceptions before a broken collarbone in Week 8 would end his season.

Bradford has had an injury-prone NFL career in his six seasons in the league that has included tearing his left ACL on two separate occasions. His most impressive year came in 2012 when he threw for 3,702 yards, 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Not much was expected from the Rams that year but they ended up finishing a respectable 7-8-1.

Given Bradford’s injury history, even going back to his college days at Oklahoma where he dealt with a shoulder issue his junior season, Bradford doesn’t have the feel of a long-term solution. Much has been made of head coach Chip Kelly’s past association with the University of Oregon and whether or not he wants Marcus Mariota in an Eagles uniform.

Philadelphia currently sits 20th in the first round and would certainly need to engineer a deal to move upwards if they truly desire Mariota. Is this move an indication that we could see further dealing from the Eagles come draft day?
