Fantasy Profile: Yunel Escobar, SS, Washington Nationals

Yunel Escobar was once regarded as a young shortstop with great power potential. Can he regain his power stroke and become fantasy relevant again?

FANTASY PROFILE: YUNEL ESCOBAR, SS, WASHINGTON NATIONALS

LWOS Ranking 27, Captain’s Value: -$1.42

If your fantasy league counts fielding as a category, then Yunel Escobar is the player for you! Currently, Escobar is relying on his glove to keep him in the lineup.  In the past, he was once regarded as a young shortstop with great power potential for the Braves. He hit 14 HR and had 76 RBI in 2009. However, those days are long gone. Escobar, now 32, has failed to reach 10 HR in four of his last five seasons and hasn’t had 60 RBIs since that great 2009 campaign. An aging middle infielder with declining power does not sound like a recipe for success to me. What can we expect from Escobar in 2015?

I expect Escobar to hit at the bottom of a very good Nationals lineup, providing occasional pop. His bat will produce enough to be the Nationals starting second basemen, but not enough for him to be drafted in fantasy leagues. Other than deep leagues or NL-only formats, I would leave Escobar on the waiver wire.
