FANTASY PROFILE: ANDRELTON SIMMONS, SS, ATLANTA BRAVES

LWOS Ranking 17, Captain’s Value $0.89

Andrelton Simmons is arguably the best Shortstop in terms of defensive skills, but how about his offensive skills?

In 2013, Simmons displayed his power hitting 17 HR and scoring 76 R. These numbers buzzed all around baseball and they made so much noise that he was ranked number 11 at SS entering 2014 by Yahoo Sports.  The 2014 season was a nightmare for Simmons and his fantasy owners. His production reduced drastically, hitting only 7 HR and scoring 44 R.

So the big question is: Will Simmons move past 2014 and bounce back?

I think he will. He has touched rock bottom, there is no way he will produce 7 HRs or less. Also, the run scoring must increase. He will probably be batting 2nd behind Nick Markakis so maybe he could scoring more runs while being more productive at the plate. In order to score more runs, he needs to improve his OBP (.286 last year) and show more patience at the plate (10.4 SO% last year).

One disadvantage involves the 2015 Braves lineup. They no longer have Justin Upton or Jason Heyward, so the team production will likely fall. Now it all comes down to Freddie Freeman and Chris Johnson, hopefully they can crush 30 + HR and produce 90+ RBI combined in order to make Simmons score, but first he needs to be on base.

If Simmons wants to bounce back, he will definitely need to hit better and put himself on base consistently. In the meantime, I wouldn’t draft him until there’s proof of improvement.
