Randall Cobb’s Contract: “A Cheesehead’s Cheddar”

Randall Cobb's Contract is under dispute in Green Bay.

Randall Cobb’s contract situation is in full swing. He would like to be paid around $9 million by the Green Bay Packers next year. With 91 grabs, 1,287 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in the 2014 regular season followed by a strong playoff presence, it seems he deserves compensation.

I am a Packers fan. Not only was I elated by Cobb’s success for my favorite team, but I insightfully selected him to most of my fantasy leagues where he delivered tremendously. As a Cheesehead I should be rallying for Cobb to be paid. Jordy Nelson asked for his due penance last year and was reciprocated with exactly what he wanted. Jordy then outperformed that contract by most standards. I should shout “Keep Cobb!” from the roof tops.

Though I will not.

Randall Cobb has been a great player and consummate Packer, playing to earn his place every step of the way. His statistics from last year speak for themselves. Cobb is also part of a high powered offensive attack unlike anywhere else. The smashmouth running style of Eddie Lacy paired with Jordy Nelson’s propensity to blow out coverages for huge gains allows wiggle room for Cobb to do his thing.

Oh yeah, and there is this guy named Aaron Rodgers who is pretty good too. I’m not sure if there is an algorithm for calculating how much a quarterback’s ability to keep a play alive directly affects a receiver’s ability to become open. There should be. If there was, Cobb would not be asking for nine million dollars to catch balls from Rodgers.

The Packers are not hurting for cap room. They are simply locking down the assets of the team that are the most difficult to replace first. Ted Thompson thrives in perpetual success. If paying a player becomes an issue he is more likely to let them walk than negotiate beyond the team needs. This is why the Packers are annual contenders for the Lombardi Trophy.

Cobb is a great player with a consuming spirit. He has earned whatever it is he will demand from a team that is in need of a playmaker. If it is time to say good bye then I wish him success in his ventures outside of Titletown. The Packers might still sign Cobb. With a seething defensive line, and middle linebacker A.J. Hawk now on the market I might be the only Packers fan hoping he takes his walking papers so we can address other concerns.
