FANTASY PROFILE: XANDER BOGAERTS, SS, BOSTON RED SOX

LWOS Ranking 9, Captains Value $2.95

Xander Bogaerts is a solid ball player that has the ability to be an All-Star. After a short debut with the Boston Red Sox in 2013, Bogaerts played his first full season in 2014 slashing .240/.297/.362 with 12 homers in 594 plate appearances. Bogaerts does have power as he posted a .550 SLG% in AA and a .453 SLG% in AAA, showing a potential for a 20+ HR season in the majors. Bogaerts has good plate discipline for a 22-year-old with a 6.6 BB% and a 23.2 K%. Both of those are slightly below league average, but he is very young and has the skill and knowledge to improve.

If it weren’t for a terrible stretch in the middle of the 2014 season, Bogaerts numbers would have looked a lot different. From June-July, he posted a dismal .161/.208/.252 line with a 0.17 BB/K ratio. There wasn’t any injury to report, but I believe it was just a major slump for a young man who was probably trying to do too much for a team that had high expectations. Bogaerts seemed to figure things out a little, as he finished the season on a high note hitting .313/.317/.490 in September with 4 homers.

A report from Kyle Brasseur at ESPN paints a good outlook for the 2015 season. Bogaerts has been training at a special complex in Arizona during the off-season, the same one Dustin Pedroia trains at, and the results are showing. With a stronger body and some experience under his belt, Xander Bogaerts could have that breakout year that everyone is expecting.
