BREAKING: Horton for Clarkson Deal Done

Just when the pre-trade deadline week couldn’t get any crazier…

All about the money on this one.

David Clarkson signed a contract in the 2013 offseason that will pay him 5.25 million until 2019-20. Nathan Horton that same summer signed a seven-year pact with the Blue Jackets that will pay him $5.3 million until that same year.

Similar contracts, but in terms of actual play on the ice, it’s night and day. Clarkson, though he has not lived up to the 30-goal prowess as a power forward that he showed in New Jersey, has potted ten goals and 15 points over 58 games. He hit that mark in his best season in 2011-12 when he hit 46 points.

Horton? Well, his career may possibly be over. He was diagnosed with a degenerative back disease that has kept the 29-year old out since April 9th, 2014. He had 203 goals and 218 assists in 627 NHL games with the Blue Jackets, Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers. (AP)

In terms of salary in the deal, no team retains any, as it is a straight contract for contract swap, but the Blue Jackets get an actual player on the ice, while the Leafs get a contract to pay to a player who may never play one game for them over the remainder of the deal.
