Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose Tears Meniscus in Knee Again

Chicago Bulls' point guard Derrick Rose tore his menial meniscus in his right knee for the second time. It is his third major knee injury in 3 years.

In what could be considered an annual heartbreak, Chicago Bulls’s point guard Derrick Rose has torn his medial meniscus in his right knee again. The Score reported late Tuesday night that Rose reported to practice Tuesday with pain in his right knee. A subsequent MRI confirmed the tear and Rose will undergo surgery.

Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose Tears Meniscus in Knee Again

It is not clear yet when the 26 year-old Rose injured his knee. Rose had not been playing well since the All-Star break, averaging 10.7 points and shooting 23.5% in the past three games. Rose scored only eight points and shot 1-13 in a win against the Milwaukee Bucks Monday night. In contrast, Rose had averaged 20.8 points per game in the four games prior to the All-Star break.

K.C. Johnson reported that neither Rose nor the Bulls know when it happened and do not know if it is season ending. They are hoping it is more like Russell Westbrook’s latest meniscus injury and not as severe as Rose’s first meniscus tear. Westbrook has had three surgical procedures on his torn meniscus and returned from the last surgery in only two months during the 2013-2014 season.

Bulls’ head coach Tom Thibodeau reported Tuesday that Rose didn’t do much in practice due to “general lower-body soreness.” Thibodeau also made a vague reference to Rose having to be sure to take time at home and not do all he is asked to do. At this point, it is speculative whether Rose hurt himself doing an activity at home. More will sure to be reported in the coming days.

Third Knee Injury in 3 Years

Rose tore the ACL in his left knee in the first game of the 2011-2012 season playoffs. Rose missed the entire 2012-2013 season. Rose returned for ten games in the 2013-2014 season when he tore his medial meniscus in his right knee. Rose elected to have meniscus repair rather than cut it to prevent additional injury. It is not clear at present what type of surgery Rose is facing this time.

Rose Injury May Be Catalyst to Help Focus Inconsistent Bulls Team

It is hard to know where this puts Rose and the Bulls. The Bulls have been an inconsistent team at best. This injury to Rose may ironically be the catalyst for the team to come together for a common purpose. Another Rose knee injury is simply devastating. Rose’s NBA colleagues came out universally expressing their get well messages for him. No one wants to see Rose hurt.

More details are sure to emerge. First, how and when the injury occurred..even if best guess. Second, how severe is the injury. Third, when is the surgery scheduled and, last, when Rose can return to action.
