Stampeders Sign Jock Sanders to Extention

Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce international running back and kick returner Jock Sanders has signed a contract extension.

The following press release comes to us from the Calgary Stampeders who make a key signing on special teams.

JOCK SANDERS SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION

Calgary Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce international running back and kick returner Jock Sanders has signed a contract extension. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Despite missing six games in 2014, his first season with the Red and White, Sanders was one of just six CFL players with 1,000 combined return yards. He was third in the league with 506 punt-return yards and second with 201 missed field goal-return yards.

The 26-year-old St. Petersburg, Fla., product also had 298 kickoff-return yards in 2014. On offence, he had 37 carries for 161 yards and 14 catches for 135 yards and one touchdown. The West Virginia alum was sidelined by injury during the post-season and did not play in the Western Final or the Grey Cup.

“Jock was an important player for us on special teams as well as on offence when he was on the field in 2014,” said Hufnagel. “I’m pleased that he has chosen to extend his contract with the club and I look forward to a healthy and productive season from him in 2015.”

Sanders played one game for the BC Lions in 2011 and was with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2012 and 2013 before signing with the Stamps as a free agent on Feb. 25, 2014. In 34 career regular-season games, he has 1,585 kickoff-return yards, 1,279 punt-return yards, 422 rushing yards and 53 receptions for 508 yards and three touchdowns.

He has been a member of the Grey Cup-winning team in each of the past two seasons – with Calgary in 2014 and with Saskatchewan in 2013.

“The Stampeders are a great team with a great group of players and I’m going to keep riding this horse,” said Sanders. “Playing with in Calgary has been a rewarding experience and I’m really looking forward to the new season and contending for another Grey Cup.”
