FANTASY PROFILE: MIGUEL CABRERA, 1B, DETROIT TIGERS

LWOS Ranking 2, Captain’s Value $26.85

Miguel Cabrera needed to repair a stress fracture in his foot and have bone spurs removed from his right ankle this off-season, leaving fantasy owners in a panic. The good news: Cabrera is out of his walking boot and can walk just as well as you and I. The bad news: Miggy will miss the beginning of spring training and isn’t in good baseball condition, according to an MLB.com report. He can’t run or put significant amount of weight on his right foot. Cabrera’s timetable to return to full baseball activities depends on how his follow up exam in mid-February goes. His status for opening day, as of right now, is still up in the air.

With all this in mind, I would still feel confident drafting Cabrera early in the 1st round. I wouldn’t take him with the first or second overall pick, but I would still draft him over Jose Abreu and Edwin Encarnacion. Even if Miggy misses a few games to open the season, which I doubt will happen considering his work ethic and determination, you will still get his .300+ AVG, 30-40 HR, and 110+ RBI. That is worth a first round pick in my book.
